Yes you might expect them to go straight down the runway to cause max damage, but the Vulcan bomb aiming gear was designed for dropping a nuclear bomb from 40000 feet where accuracy not important. It was old technology at best. Best they could do was go at an angle across the runway and hope to score damage with a bomb or two.

Great prog though. You might like to read the book "Vulcan 607" by Rowland White which goes more into how the mission nearly fell on it's arse for so many reasons, and yet was a success inspite of the odds!!
