Would it not be really difficult trying to manoeuvre the engine back in to place at the same time as trying to slot the gearbox main shaft in to the clutch assembly straight...

I'd also imagine the effort to remove all the plumbing from the engine compared to a couple of drive shafts, gear stick, prop shaft and sensors for the gearbox would be a pain.

I'd get the car as high as you can on axle stands and whip the gearbox off personally.
