Failure of the secondary air pump is an ever increasing common problem on the 06 onwards models.
It is used to inject additional air into the extracting gasses in order to overheat the catalyst during cold start.
This causes the catalyst to start working alot sooner and hence reducing cold start emissions.
If the unit starts to fail it has no impact on the car other than your slightly noisier cold start may drop in volume to a more natural cold start. The noise you hear in the exhaust (especially modern cars such as Audi RS3, AMG A45 and Supercars) is not so much due to the slightly higher idle at cold start but the action of the secondary air pump heating the catalyst causing bigger disturbances in the exhaust system.
It is possible to disable the error codes and leave the failing pump in situ.
This can be done with a simple re-flash of the ECU with the codes disabled.
On a 2.5 WRX the following codes need to be disabled, to be sure it doesn't log a fault :
