I wouldn't bother spending the extra fortune on LED mate. It all depends on what you want the telly for as well. Plasmas are good for sports etc as they have less blur but LCD are best for gaming etc.
I've got an LG 37" LCD which cost me a penny shy of £500 and the picture is fantastic, Sky HD through it looks amazing and even the footy is outta this world (in HD).
If you were thinking of going for the LED because it's so thin, again I wouldn't bother. I was speaking to a chap in our local Sony Centre the other day and he mentioned that they give no better a picture than the LCD's and he showed me an LCD TV that was just as thin as the LED...........cool
Can't remember which model it was though I'm afraid.
I'd probably consider an LED TV when they came down in price, which they inevitably will
