If it has the standard slanty top mount intercooler, the plastic connection pipes underneath can split along the seam. This would cause you to loose boost and be able to hear something.
I doubt very much it was down to fuel.
You should have 1bar boost by about 3800-4000 rpm in 5th gear.
If your not getting it until 5,500rpm in 5th then something is poorly or leaking.
Low gears will boost later i.e 2nd may be about 5,000rpm to hit one bar.
Best to try on a long straight road, plant you foot to the carpet at about 3,500 in 5th and read when it hits 1bar.
