But if it's genuine then I doubt very much it failed, as the TD's are pretty bullet proof.

The problem with the cheap units is quality control and tolerances. They can be so far out that they perform badly with regard to airflow and compressing the air and/or the seals wear really quickly due to poor tolerance.
i do agree about the ebay "quality" ones, but the std one could be salvagable, and in this day and age, maybe worth the service kit.
