Default British Rallycross Championship R2 & R3 2020 – Lydden Hill

There hasn't been much motorsport to attend this year, so I was ecstatic to get an invite to the second and third rounds of the British Rallycross Championship at Lydden earlier this month.

Two days of decent racing, including the first rallycross night race to be held at Lydden.

After a disastrous season with GCK in the World Rallycross Championship, Liam Doran was using the British rounds to drive the EKS-built Audi he used in 2019.

Round 1 winner Mark Donnelly started off well with a win on Saturday, but finished Sunday in the gravel trap after breaking his steering rack.

After making his rallycross debut in an RX150 buggy in August, TT legend John McGuinness was trying his hand in a Focus Supercar, it was a pretty spectacular debut…

…the Focus was back in action in time for John to finish the day and be used by another driver on Sunday. McGuinness finished his weekend with some bonus RX150 races.

The night racing was an interesting experience – and something I hope they repeat in future – really cool to see details like interior lights and glowing brake discs that wouldn’t be visible during the day.

Defending Champion Julian Godfrey had a difficult weekend and was driving the car a lot more aggressively than I can recall seeing before: lots of sliding and some very tight lines through the chicane.

Although there were some decent cars and drivers on the entry, no one could touch Liam Doran. He won every qualifying session bar one on Saturday, then completely swept Sunday. His personality might be divisive but, in a reliable car, there is no question that he can drive.

The last round of the 2020 Championship will be held at Lydden in January. Fingers crossed that Kent is in a lower CV19 tier, so the circuit can have spectators in attendance.
