in terms of engine spec it would all depend on what power target or mods you were planning (if any?) as the original hydraulic tappet heads can be problematic and are best replaced with the later MY97/98 solid shim type (ideally the v.rare STi under-bucket option)

In terms of power targets I prefer the stock 230-250hp im running at the moment. It's more than enough for me, my driving style and my capability. Plus on the GC8 chassis I feel the light weight makes up for any lack in power compared to more modern cars.

Ah so I guess compression ratio is something I need to take into account and possibly upgrading the tappets.
