Default British Rallycross Championship R9 2018 – Silverstone

Went to Silverstone last weekend for the final round of the British Rallycross Championship. I wasn’t that impressed with the track earlier in the year, but it’s not too far to drive and a chance to see a bit more racing before the off season!

Took plenty of pictures, few faves here:

Quite a few class titles had already been decided, but the Supercar Championship went down to the last round with three challengers – Ollie O’Donovan, Julian Godfrey and Mark Higgins – all capable of winning the title.

Fastest of the Retro cars was Steve Harris in his RS200. Unfortunately Harris threw a drive shaft during the heats and, with no spares available, he didn’t make it to the final.

Oliver Bennett was a new arrival to rallycross last year and, although he has committed a lot of resources to the sport, I haven’t been that impressed by him so far.

He was the driver of the day at Silverstone though and he would have surely been a challenger for the top step of the podium had his day not been ended by a fire.

Ollie O’Donovan had lent his “spare” car to 2016 Supercar Champion Dan Rooke. Not sure if Ollie was being generous to Dan or just trying to put another car in the way of his rivals but, either way, it was great to see Rooke in action again.

Rallycross veteran John Cross has returned to the sport with a freshly built Lancia Stratos. Cross wasn’t the quickest in the Retro class, but his Stratos looked superb on track.

All three title challengers made it to the final. O’Donovan got stuck in traffic and, in his desperation to find a way around the car(s) in front of him, he ended up with the his bonnet flipped up.

Making a clean break from the line, Mark Higgins led the final from start to finish and, with O’Donovan finishing outside the top three, Higgins took the Championship title by two points. Mark was flawless throughout the day and despite his limited history in the sport I think he is a deserving Champion.
