Default Cambelt question

On my 94 wrx do i just need the new cambelt to change it or do i need a cambelt 'kit' and which ever i need which is a good place to get the right one. How many miles is it before you are meant to change the cambelt?

Also where is a good place to buy engine oil plus gear box oil and how much do i need to change them both exactly?

cheers

Dave

I did all my oils and cam belt a few months ago.

I strongly recomend you replace the idler pulleys and tensioner.
Dont risk cheap chinese kits off ebay, the bearings on the idlers are crap.

On your year you are looking at about £90 for tensioner, £40 for toothed pulley and 2 x £25 for the idler pulleys.
I did the water pump and both of the other belts at same time.Oh and thermostat as was only about £25

Total was about £300

I got cam belt from graham goode racing, very good price.
I got the bearings etc off ebay from jap importer, all parts are japenese made.

The engine, gearbox and diff oil i used was £100

i got my oils from VKM Motor Accessories in Burgess Hill - opposite Road Radio just down from the station. Chap in there was really helpful and owns an Evo so was interested in the scoobs too. I assume its the same on the classics? but i needed 5 litres of engine oil, 5 litres of gearbox oil (i think it used just over 4 litres) and had just about enough left over for the rear diff (uses gearbox oil too).

Yes, did cam belt myself, Its fidley getting belt on,but not that bad a job.
As far as oil quantity for a classic, 4 litres for g box and 1 litre for dif.
If you are going to trouble of doing belt and tensioners its silly not to do water pump.

If you not confident in doing belt then its safer to get it done by garage, Jafa quoted me best price, before i decided to do myself.

it is best to do tensioners too as 90% of the one's i get in at work with cam belt gone it is normally the tensioner or the water pump that has let go not the belt.

The trick to it is to lightly clamp the belt onto one of the pulleys, i used a pair of mole grips very lightly just to hold belt on then worked from left pulley across top to the right then down to bottom right pulley and across to lower left pulley, it did take me a good half dozen times, as i always ended up a tooth out, which of course would throw the timing out.

One more thing to look out for is the front crank oil seal, if you have any signs of weeping oil then change it, i did mine, its easy to do.
