Right earlier today my Scooby decided it didn't like the gearbox anymore and while on boost in 3rd gear it popped out and now sounds like its full of nuts and bolts, Car still drives fine in all gears apart from 3rd which has no drive, gearbox is very noisy throughout all gears though. Now am I better off getting my gearbox rebuilt or is it easier for me to source a replacement box and do it myself on the driveway?
Roughly how much am I looking at for a decent recon or low mileage box, my car is a 2.0 turbo facelift classic, the engine is uprated producing 352bhp but was still on the original turbo2000 gearbox that has now had enough. Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated. Leon |

Im about 20 mins from brands hatch, if its easier I will get a box supplied and fitted but if its going to cost too much I will get a new box and fit it myself. Just wondering if I should upgrade my gearbox or replace with the same that's fitted, I just know the box that's just gone bang has had a hard life and covered nearly 130k so its done well really, the new engine is still going strong though and is near on 50k

you can get second hand off ebay for £100 - 150. I would suggest you get a TY754.
I can recommend Jaffa on here for fitting as he has fitted mine twice (2 different cars). he's not expensive and knows what he is doing |

ty754 wouldn't you need to change rear diffs aswell

There's someone breaking a v4 sti in littlehampton I can ask about the box if your intersted ?
|
#11
|

|

not necessarily. I went from a 754 to a 752 on my last box change. although Jaffa did change the diff for me, it was the same ratio as the one I had in it.

cost just depends on what im getting for the money. Do i need to get the numbers off the box before i get another? It would be a lot easier for someone to either help me change it or do it for me as i think it will be hard work at home on the driveway. I just want to get the right decent box for the car that will last long for the right price.

If you don't want to get an old high mileage box or a 6 speed which are the two price extremes . Get a hawk Wrx 5 speed with low mileage along with its rear diff

#14
|
||||
|

yes, get the box code. At least you can get one with the same ratio for the rear diff so you don't need to change that as well. Its an **** to do on a driveway, but possible.

or if someone can supply and fit one at a decent price i will be happy, car is driveable but makes a racket in all gears with no 3rd gear obviously

Rear diff will be hr at tops to change and will give you a better option than buying another tired box that would more than likely break

if i take the engine out it will be a full refurb, i don't plan on doing that just yet, just want to replace the gearbox with one that will last ideally.

It sounds like more work but not really as you don't have to f about on your back getting the box in . Been there done that just trying to help |

ok well i appreciate everyone advice, ive just not done an impreza gearbox before, maybe if someone in the know would help me through it id take the engine out and change the box. just sounds worse of a job then it is i guess.
what sort of price am i looking at supplied and fitted? |

I've done a box before on the side of the road. first time, t took me 3 weekends. 2nd time, it was 1 weekend, but I had a helper and an inspection pit. After that, I paid someone to do it for me. you need steroids or something IMO cuz it's f'in heavy!
if you can get an engine crane and take the engine out like CJ said, then I would do that. it may sound like more work but at least you wont give yourself ars3 grapes with all the straining laying on your back trying to get the box back in. |

Oh dear. Is it wrong to tell you your brother laughed? Take the opportunity to leave it off the road for a couple of months while the weathers crap, save some pennies then send it up to slowboy for a 6 speed conversion. You know it's your baby, and no expense should be spared.

No they can possibly fit a supplied gearbox. Its finding one that seems to be the hard bit at the moment. A decent 2000 5 speed will do. But if someone's got an sti box and diff ill take it if it will fit my car

ive managed to get a version 3 sti box with apparent matching 4.444 rear diff and shafts. hoping this will all be able to fit in a day. Whats the best gear oil I can use to prolong the life of my new box? Id also like to reassure ive got the right diff for the gearbox how do I tell this by counting the teeth?

What's the model numbers on your old and new box Burt? Isn't the v3 sti box short ratio? You'll be doing 4k revs at 70, and you'll get arm ache from keep changing gears!

Yeah Im happy with that though mate, plus believe it or not the nur spec isn't as loud the higher the revs on the motorway. its a bit droney at 3000rpm but over that it has a much nicer tone. Im not into flat out speed anyways its getting there that counts. going to be fitting a new exedy pink box racing clutch at the same time. Hopefully it all goes together well.
