And another small job done today, changed the clutch fluid, horrible, 18 year old black stuff replaced with nice new Pagid DOT4, (cap says DOT3 but I'm sure it will be fine). May help with the stiffening clutch pedal when sat in traffic.
Next weekends job is power steering fluid as guess that is 18 years old as well and makes some interesting noises on full lock. Then it's gearbox and diff oil time along with a service, someone remind me why I kept it? |

"And another small job done today, changed the clutch fluid, horrible, 18 year old black stuff replaced with nice new Pagid DOT4, (cap says DOT3 but I'm sure it will be fine). May help with the stiffening clutch pedal when sat in traffic."
I had the same issue on Friday night travelling on the M25 from Guilford , loads of traffic, clutch stiffened up to the point I thought my left foot wasn't engaging with my brain. |

It's not too bad a job Steve, 12mm socket for the 2 intercooler bolts, a screwdriver for the hose clips, a 10mm spanner for the bleed nipple, a bit of hose and whatever receptacle you use to catch the old brake fluid balances nicely in the undertray. Hardest bit is getting the intercooler to throttle body hose back on again but as yours has the silicone STI one it's probably a lot easier.
Oh, and you'll need someone's left leg to pump the clutch pedal. |
#121
Thanks for the advice Shane, with my luck with car mechanics I think I'll leave it for the experts.
I'm also beginning to think that the clutch is begining to slip The way I have the servicing phased ,the blob is 6 month's before the wagon but with no trip this year and no miles on the blob since Germany last year I might be forced to rethink . |

#122

Well for anyone that thinks their Power Steering pump is on its way out can I suggest the first thing you do is a fluid change, just spent half an hour and £5 on a litre of Dexron III and now no more whiny power steering pump. What came out was black, what went in was red!!! Have a spare litre if anyone needs any.

Could be a job worth doing considering its age.
Did you cyphon out ? |
#124

Yep, big syringe and a bit of hose, top up, steering lock to lock a few times, siphon out, top up, repeat until the fluid that was coming out was much the same as what was going in.

Blasted, plated and powder coated, they won't rust again, fan blades were cleaned with autosol metal polish of all things, seemed to work well, new stainless nuts holding the fans in and new stainless bolts for the shroud mounts, just need to find a way of securing the connectors to the shrouds as the little clips fell apart, don't want to leave them loose as they are next to the headers.
Will do the cam belt while I have access and Probably fit the new bumper bar that I've had for about 5 years. |

As some will have seen from Facebook, it's been a busy day:
Old rad and fans out, told you they were bad. ![]() ![]() Thankfully no real rust in the front panel where the rad mounts, it's had a rub down and a coat of paint to clean it up. ![]() Also sorted out the bumper bar, I saw this was a bit crusty not long after I got the car in 2012 when I changed a sidelight bulb. I picked up one from JPP from an imported V3/4 STI, thought it was about time I fitted it, hadn't realised how different they were. ![]() Was about to get the grinder out but thought I'd do a trial fit before I painted it and the bumper fits over it fine, so bolted in place, one less job to do. .Next job for tomorrow is cam belt whilst there's plenty of room and then put it all back together again. |
#172

Good work, Looks like that's the next job for me. Better to be safe than sorry.
Link to fan shrouds and rad would be useful ;o) |
#173

Fan shrouds were given to me, I just stripped them down and dropped them to the powder coasters, rad was an eBay special. Only other thing you'll need is new hose clips and for piece of mind, new top and bottom hoses.

#176

all go then

#177
Yep, all done. Cam belt, tensioner and all pulleys and idler, new aux belts, new radiator, fans and shrouds, new bumper bar and a fresh load of coolant.
Filled it in reverse from the turbo hose with the heater open until the header tank was full, ran until the temperature Gauge was nearly half way, topped up header and expansion and cap on and ran till the fans cut in. Allowed to cool and topped up with a small amount. Been out for a blast on this hot day and no problems. |
#178
Spot on that's exactly how I did mine. Should be good for ages now. Worth looking at other hoses tho that turbo hose you filled from I found mine not to seal
Properly again after so ended with new one and clips |
#179

Top and bottom hoses, turbo hose and the 2 thin ones from the header tank to rad and expansion bottle are now silicone with new jubilee clips.

Well finally got the alloy lower arms, new droplinks and new ball joints fitted today, wasn't too bad a job other than rounding off one of the pinch bolts on the ball joints, got it undone with a 13mm impact socket hammered onto it in the end.
Also a bit of new under bonnet bling, how do the chinese manage to do these for £4.99 delivered, the STI logo is even up the right way when its fitted.

Had this fitted for a few weeks now and forgot I finally got a photo of it lit up at night, 60mm Apexi boost gauge that I got from Leighton in a modified 52mm GC8 specific pillar pod, nice colour match to the rest of the dash both in in daylight and when illuminated. Tried loads of methods of mounting the pod without putting a screw into the A pillar but had to give in as it just wouldn't sit flush or stay in place.
