I've just fitted a set of HIDs to my bugeye morettes, and whilst the light output is fantastic in comparison to the standard bulbs (really impressed), i've come up with a different problem.
When flashing people (ooh err) the power to the dipped beam is cut momentarily whilst the full beam is triggered. This isn't a problem with normal bulbs, but the HIDs have an ignite time of 1-2 seconds i think. The result is that when driving at night, if i flash someone, the HIDs go out for a second. Not only does it look rather odd, it means that at 50-60mph, i could cover a good 30 metres in darkness ![]() Does anyone know how to change this so the dipped beam maintains power whilst the full beam is activated? Is it a relay issue? Cheers people ![]() |

I would just ignore it, enjoy the thrill.
Or, speed up and enjoy it more, a proper white knuckle ride ![]() Or.................................. tape a torch to the dash ![]() |

Earth the HID ballasts to the chassis so they stay on with High Beam I can take a look at Dunsfold if you like as I had exactly the same issues with mine it's due to Subaru switching the earths not the live!
Just a quick sketch

Hope the picture helps!
Basically the Dips come on with the live which only has power when the lights are on, this power is on for both dip and high it's just the earths that switch from Dip to high. By Earthing the ballast directly the HIDs will stay on with the main beam. The only down side is that the HIDs will come on if you 'flash to pass' with the dips off which will shorten their life slightly. There is a fix for this but it involves butchering the wiring harness in the steering column adding resistors and relays plus running a new loom to the lights!

Oh crap .................... I was working out a "fix the torch to dash" Bracket for him too!
![]() That sketch has cost me a million pounds in worldwide distibution of said kits. I dunno, try and make money out of someone elses misfortunes and you get a "do gooder" come along and keep you poor ![]() |
