Default £260 pads :(

OK, so my car is in at dealer (as it's still under warranty) trying to get this leak sorted out still. I also had a squeaky front right brake and a slow puncture on the rear left.

I know it was a bit cheeky to ask them to have a look at the puncture.

To be honest, if I would have bought it without a warranty, then I would have been doing all this myself. I had a look at the brake, and there is a tiny piece of metal touching the disc (not sure what it's called but I'm sure you all know what I mean).

Anyway, I just got a phone from the garage saying that they've sealed (again) around the lights, couldn't find and leak on the wheel, and the squeaking is because pads are low and I need new ones. £260!!!! Now I know there is a little bit extra there because its main dealer, but still, £260 for front pads, when I've not even done 2000 miles in it yet? Just doesn't sound right to me.

So I thought I would see what you guys thought, and what sort of price/options I have available. I did see on a thread something about 02/03 crossover cars having very varying pads setup.

Thanks guys

...£260 is daylight robbery for a set of pads - I've bought kevlar pads and front discs for my Hawk WRX for far, far less than that, courtesy of GoodSpeed... (If you're prepared to do the pads youself of course which isn't hard tbh... )

BUT... first thing I'd check if you've only done 2000 miles is that the pad wear indicator is not just a bit bent and touching the disc - I had this on mine, when I had loads left on the pad...

Look for a thin piece of metal attached to the edge of the pad that is bend to resemble this kind of shape |_____________|. If it's a bit bent, then the | bits might be touching the disc a bit prematurely, and the garage are perhaps just trying it on...

Hope that helps...

It is daylight robbery for sure.

I have just bought a set of Ferado DS2500 for £180.00. from RCM. So you paying that for a set of OE pads really is quite fookin shocking.

As per the other question, I think Lupuss hit the nail bang on the head

Well I am sure it is bent, and it's that that's causing the noise. Guy told me 'pads are 95% worn'. I don't think that are, and I don't know what the ratio is with miles per percentage, but as I've said, i've only done 2000 miles since I've had it, and only about 5 of those were 'hard'.

I think I will get it back off them, take a picture or two, and you can all have a look.

Whhooo hooo!! Thankyou

3mm is the normal thickness limit when pads should be really changed just to be safe... mind you I ran mine on an Escort I had to bare metal once... never again!!!!!!!!

Thanks for the comments guys. I just got a txt saying that it is ready to collect, although I hadn't rang them back with my decision yet!

I will pick it up later, and get a couple of pics for you

I'd do that, anyone can change a set of pads cheaply if they genuinely are low. £260 is a complete rip-off for OEM pads.

I'd be able to change them myself, after borrowing a wind back tool. Just didnt want to invalidate the warranty or anything silly like that.

You don't even need one of those tbh... I used one of these and left the old pad in place so as to push both pistons back at the same time...

Just make sure the clamp has rubber pads on the ends.

Not sure about the warranty issue though - mind you you can still probably save yourself a load of cash by buying performance pads yourself and paying a 'normal' garage to fit them... Then warranty intact, brakes upgraded and all for less than the main dealer - garage just has to be VAT registered to maintain the warranty I believe....

OK, £260 was for the 'Genuine' Subaru pads, and then £180 for Ferrodo's.

Don't fancy either of those, as I know I can get MUCH better than Ferrodo's for that price.

Car is back, and I think they have just bent the metal tab thingy back a bit so it is not touching, not too sure until I have a look...

Contact Alyn.

£260 for genuine Subaru OE + labour for fitting is expensive but about the going rate I would think.

I had a dealer try to say to me once that I had wrote off my front discs and pads 3 days and 200 miles after buying it. They also told me I was going to have to pay for them as they were ok when it left them and it was going to be about £500 for patten parts so found my own at about £200 from the same parts supplier that they used? So we came to an agreement on price had them do the work then didn't pay out of princapal as it had done 200 mls in 3 days!!!

I had Ferrodo's DS2500 the first time we all went to the Ring, They squealed a little due to not having the chamfered bed in edges but i thought they were brilliant once warmed up.

Not had bad experience of them at all, I'd just prefer to put something different than what I have put on previous cars lol

And a new seal did cure the major leak, theres just a little dribble emerging from near the right hand lights, but they have 'resealed' so I am hoping that is now the end of it lol

I would have come to you for my DS2500's but it's being done at the same time as my wheel bearings and geo at RCM.

I'll be in touch shortly about a possible group buy of Millers Octane Boost again soon Alyn.

I thought you had a bad experience sorry my mistake.

Im a bit ocd with brakes & pads {like Clive is with car cleaning} . So i tend to try alot of pads out. Daily driving & some track use i find the Ferrodo DS3000 to be BRILIANT. By far the best pads ive tried so far. PF's are also very good. Pagit's i must of bought the wrong one's as they went in the bin after 1 day. Not trying to tell anybody what to buy this is just me passing on some of my findings. Alyn@AS performance
is the man to ask JusticeEmpire
