Angry Really P***ed off !

What have I done to deserves this ! Taking my youngest son to Haywards Heath this morning when I heard a rubbling noise coming from the engine, this became to very loud Knocking noise, you guessed it " Bottom end". I have only done 520 miles in it. The garage is coming to pick it up shortly.
Going up to Brdford this afternoon with my middle son to look at a very nice Ra, lets hope we have a bit more luck.
A very p***ed off Martyn.

I can't believe the shocking luck you are having at the moment.

For god sake, stop and spend £1.00 on a losing lottery ticket on the way and have that as the 3rd bit of bad luck.

Hope all goes well for you mate.

Sorry to hear that Martyn.
Fingers crossed for you that it's the cam belt tensioner, as there is a design fault on the 99/00 ones (and even some of thelatter ones) that cause them to loose pressure.

They tend to do it more when weather is cold.
This causes a knocking from the front/middle not too dis-similar to big end failure. Due to the tensioner bouncing on it's end stop when the belt goes round.

The engine in Worzels, before he rebuilt it, was a Subaru return thought to be big end, that ended up being just the cam belt tensioner. But Subaru dealers have a tendancy just to rip the bottom ends out without checking as they can claim it under the warranty and get paid the labour for the job.

Good luck with it all
On a WRX I had years back. I had what sounded like a bottom end go. I took it to the stealers. They said definately bottom end and wanted big bucks. It sounded like the bottom end - I wasnt convinced. I took it too my AA patrol mate - again verdict bottom end. I took it to an independent subaru mechanic - turned out to be the water pump! So get a second and third view of it as sometimes what sounds terminal isnt. (as in the tensioner example given above). A compression test is your best bet.
