Small update since our return from Spa, and new engine fitted I attempted to buy some
Alcon 365mm Calipers and discs today only to find out that they dont quite fit under my current wheels So now have some decision making to do on that front, as not sure what the best step forward is.. currently looking at lots of wheels! I also had the map re-tweeked today after a dyno pull last Saturday revealed the car was running a little bit rich and was down a little bit on power from where we had expected it to be. We had originally mapped with a bit of leak on the IC pipework and with the knowledge that engine was an unknown on its way to Spa a week after fitting had been done on the safe side. (385bhp/320lb/ft at 1.45 bar and 10.8's on the AFR) Hats of to Richard at FB Tuning who assisted me with fitting a few bits and then re-tweeked the fuelling, turned the boost up just a smidge and told me there was room for a little more!.. As I did not manage to fit any brakes today I had time to dive in on Charlie at Surrey Rolling road for a quick power run to see how much difference the little tweek had made.. Quite happy with the results 440/380 @1.6bar will do nicely ![]()

Shame about the Alcons but I am sure your will find a solution one way or another.
Some really good results from that JDM lump and glad to hear everything should have been ironed out to make it both reliable and 'pokey'! I wonder if running at 440 makes you a little on the nervous side for your longevity...? |

No denying the JDM block can take a lot, and that UK lumps are running plenty too, but I know Dave is a man who, despite all his track time, likes his engine to be well within its limits and running as sweet as a nut.

440 should make for a cracking car.
Much more and it would be utterly pointless on the road in my opinion as you'd never really get to stretch its legs. I'm not massively superstitious, but I'm not sure I'd have tinkered with my car on Friday 13th!! |

Could run bit more timing between 4500 - 5500rpm (the normal 'Det' hot spot), as the curve is drooping a touch.
It would sustain the torque plateau a bit better too, removing that torque spike. |
|
#123
|
||||
|
||||
|
Yeah there is definitely scope to push the timing up there in the mid range, Rich had said as much also. He said 450 even 460 or beyond is possible at this boost level with a little more aggressive timing at the top also which was encouraging, definitely don't really want to push more boost on the standard gaskets and head bolts, although we tested at 1.75 and all was fine only dyno'd at 1.7
Fuelling is around 11.5 to 11.7

Boost creeping up at 5500 WOT is also worth a look at.
If that run was in 3rd or 4th on the Dyno the effect out on the road will be higher and for longer in 5th and 6th. So a potential hazard for track style driving where your clicking upto 120+ in the higher gears. |

Yeah 4th on the dyno, not sure if it had something to do with the avcr still learning or being in learn mode in 4th and 5th, but quite often hit the top of 5th on track, it has always seemed to creep a little there

Think we chatted about it for a while over a breakfast last year in Battle
Standard ecu struggles to control boost past 1.5/ 1.6 bar as far as I am aware. I remember you saying about 3d boost mapping was better on the standard ecu.

Small update again,
I have managed to lay my hands on something that makes the car stop a little better, after realising with recent increases to power that straight line speed down the straights on trackdays has gone up by a fair whack this seemed a prudent move. I had a prompt from a friendly fellow trackday addict that these little numbers where coming up for sale so a deal was done!.. they are a bit of tight fit under 18's! Please excuse the dirty wheel arches in the pics ![]() ![]()

Bit of an update,
After finding out I needed a new OS CV joint on Thursday right before our ring trip.. I went into mad panic and frantically sourced not 1 but 2!, making a quick visit to FB Tuning Rich was very helpful in fitting the thing and while it was up on the ramp. bleeding the brakes.. he also kindly moved the fuel cut at 1.76 bar which I have run into a few times recently on slightly more aggressive boost duty settings, while performing lazy 5th gear overtakes. Once again big thanks to Rich who always helps me out in my times of need! Today! A rather savage trip over the mountain on the Isle of Man recently had me boil (in traffic afterwards) my PFC dot4 racing brake fluid that had only been bled threw a month or so before.. So I set about gathering bits to improve the brake cooling efficiency - which is pretty piss poor on Subaru's in all honesty, and finally today found time to throw it all on the car. bits used:- Roo-ducts (US import) - they look like hospital piss pipes or something! 76mm heatproof 2 ply silicon pipe. 102mm neoprene 2 ply pipe 92mm neoprene 2 ply left overs 76mm Revotec exit ducts Some scrap aluminium plate. Silicon sealant. Hamarite under seal with wax-oil Jubile clips. Hand full of rivets Zip ties.... lots and lots of zipties! First things first. Mount the wheel arch roo-ducts.. this involved sizing them up and then drilling a few holes and tapping them etc. I read somewhere on a US forum that you needed to space the bottom bolt hole otherwise it causes cracking! so did this too, filled all the drilled/tapped holes with hammerite underseal/waxoil and then bolted them up. ![]() I then fed both sides with 102mm neoprene pipe (which is massive by the way!) although I was forced to step down the size of the pipework to 92mm on the passenger side due to room and angular constraints presented by the location of the IC pipes and Oil cooler.. very tempted to re-root all of it! This process involves some trimming of the wheel arch liners (been here before!), silicon sealing the pipe to the existing standard brake duct holes in the front bumper + some zip ties ![]() ![]() Once happy with the all the pipework feeding the roo-ducts I started work on fabricating some simple brackets out of some scrap plate aluminium and revotec exit ducts, they ended up looking something like this.. ![]() ![]() Once fitted look something like this.. ![]() Other side with pipework attached ![]() while fitting these was very careful not to interfere with ABS sensor. ![]() Once all in place and lots of revolutions of the steering wheel back and forth by my excellent assistant Handbrake, making sure all was solid I secured a couple of thin strips of rubber to stop any chaffing of the pipe on the coilovers/ ABS sensor. As you can see once its all back together the clearances are nice! NS ![]() OS ![]() Clearance to the tyres is a little on the close side! ![]() Needless to say tyres (of a different size!) getting fitted in next few days Finished..! Also found time to re trim and fresh piece of grill for behind the oil cooler. Next project Might be to seal it all in with some kind of bigger improved splitter I think! ![]() Going out for a spirited drive afterwards and quickly measuring the brakes once arriving home, both discs where under 80 degrees C which is very encouraging. More to follow.

Good work, looks pretty neat and tidy and if effective should really help out. Surprised you didn't go all out on a water cooling system 😉
I presume you have no backing plates behind this bigger brake set up and used the subsequently spare bolt hole to attach the alu plate? |

Did a little seat swapping for something that holds you a little better, drivers side standard passenger side XL to accommodate who ever!! The total weight saving from this including frames and so forth is just over the weight of 1x normal seat, 18kg lighter than the original setup. Still have harnesses to fit but they can wait! Please excuse the phone snaps:- ![]()

Dave did say he was having to change it as CJ was a lardy arse.

A long time planned project has finally come to fruition today, as anyone that tracks these cars will tell you fuel cut is a serious issue due to the daft tank/pickup design, and having had my fair share of experiencing this issue first hand I had to do something about it.
I had bought all the parts for this Job (with the exception of 1 or 2 bits) about 9 months ago but never got round to fitting it all as I knew it would be more than a 1 day operation. I wanted to go with an under bonnet install as I do not like the idea of having all the fuel setup in the boot along with the potential cabin smell there is the noisy bosh 044 pumps to contend with. I have to say a thank you to FB tuning for loads of useful advise and a massive massive thankyou to C.J for help with advise, planning and installation of all the kit, not to mention the use of his Garage to work in! parts fitted: 1.5 litre swirl pot bosh 044 fuel reg Fuel lab inline fiter, Fuel lab FPR, (a different one) Distribution block, Parallel fuel rails braided lines with Goodrich fittings + sleeved fuel rail lines. Racecar mini washer bottle and pump. Pics:- The beginning:- last weekend we trial fitted everything except the rails and lines, with various bits drilled for fitting, lines placed and trimmed cut to size then done up in place to insure everything would fit just so, this also gave us the opportunity to find out if we needed any extra bits! one or two more where required. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() This weekend we set about the job of fitting it all! Manifold off! ![]() Rails on! manifold back again! ![]() with all the lines fed through, brackets made and fitted, pumps and filters mounted, lines fitted! I do need to paint that old bracket ![]() even a dinky washer bottle All done and fuel pressure set!.. ![]() Now to collar FB and hopefully a dry day to tweek the map

Looks like a top job, well done to both CJ and yourself for getting it all installed and successfully filling what little available free space there is in an Impreza engine bay, the amount of plumbing and pipe work puts a submarine to shame!

Small update:-
Fuel system got tweaked again a few weeks back, replaced all the rail lines with teflon and fire-sleeved them, removed distribution block and changed reg. ![]() Then map tweek again to compensate, running a little more boost now circa 1.75 bar and above! I need to add this dinky fuel cooler in somewhere.. ![]() And urm, I purchased some new electronics, not rushed with this but seemed the right way to go with what the car gets used for![]() I've also placed a little order up the road with some well known fabricators, will update again soon!

That's a lot of excitement and change in one box, plenty more possibilities now Dave, how long before you start really playing with this yourself?

It's been another couple of weekends of Car play, so thought I would update,
As some of you already know I have run without the rear seats in the car for the last 5 months, I had been planning to fill the gap left by said rear seats with something sensible to make use of the lovely front seats I'd bought, so plans where set in motion and things discussed, and a plan was hatched, First things first,.. having no seat and a stripped interior is fun for a while (particularly when you run with no plastics and no door trims etc! but it gets a little boomy particularly if your car isn't that quiet to start with, so a rear seat delete/firewall was in order (No! rear passengers are too heavy!) C.J. had managed to source some aluminium honeycomb sheet as a base and kindly let me pinch a piece! several cardboard cutouts to check fitment! a jigsaw and a short while later and we had a board, backed with sound deadening pads and material too! It fits! ![]() Some Carpet was ordered to make the front a little bit more interior friendly and add to the sound deadening effect, + some anti vibration tape added to stop any rubbing noises that might occur with any chassis flex, ![]() Seat delete done!! After pre ordering this 5 weeks previously to arrive on a specific day! I was very nervous that this next piece of the puzzle would turn up on time or not.. I was unsure! but thankfully it did. ![]() The next day Chris and myself set about pulling what remained of my interior out and cramming the above into the back of the car, surprisingly this went in without having to remove a door! a tourniquet was used on the legs, to squeeze it in, several hours later after some measuring and marking and a spot of sanding /welding and some drilling.. ![]() ![]() And the cage was in!, harnesses where fitted, and seat delete re-installed! ![]() Next Day I set about completing the remainder of the carpet trimming and plastic re-install + re-paint of the lower crash bar and under seal the bottom of the car. Results of all our labour!:- Seatbelts or harnesses available! ![]() ![]() ![]() I cannot thank C.J. enough for all his help in all this.. I am really happy with the results
