Default My project welcome to all

Hi to each and every one of you

So finally after 37 years i have bitten and purchased myself a 1995 UK spec impreza wagon. The old girl cost me the grand sum of £350. now for my 350 great British pounds i received a running, mot till July but very ugly wagon. The bodywork is pretty rust free and straight just very faded and patchy. so first of i am going to be removing the standard wheels replacing all the brake components, then on to full oil/ coolant changes. now i have no mechanical experience what so ever but as my wife says(mid life crises) give it a go. so i am going to be doing all the work myself including plastidip the whole car in Matt black. i am located in east grinstead in west Sussex and have a cafe on a fishing lake in tunbridge wells. if any body would like to come by with any info or help when i am need then please feel free i can pay in full english breakfasts and pulled pork buns..
Look forward to meeting and chatting to some of you.

Cool! Firstly welcome to SES and a great first post. I've often though this is the way to do it and learn at the same time. With a £350 car you won't worry if anything goes wrong, but you could end up with a great car that you can look at and say 'I did that'

I'll look forward to seeing it progress.

Steve

Welcome! What a great way to get in to the world of Subaru, sounds like you have an exciting and interesting time ahead.

A friend of mine has recently bought a 1999 turbo 2000 wagon and I'm sharing what I know with him (all be it not a great deal...!) but I feel important!

Did you mention full English breakfast...

Welcome to SES Sounds like a bargain if you've got a relatively rust free car with no major issues for £350!

Hi guys and thank you for the input. Parts wise at the moment I am looking for full brake overhaul so new disks and pads and anything else that goes with it. Full exhaust system. Alloys. Our cafe can seat about 40 and loads of parking as it is on a fishing lake. Yes full English all the way

so full engine oil/diff oil(30 mins to get old oil filter off) and coolant change has been completed. front end has been sprayed Matt black by myself, not plastidip in the end just regular motorparts spray cans and you know what looks 100% better then before. onto full brake overhaul next will post pics up once full respray has been completed.

Sounds like you're making good progress. What type of fishing lake do you have? , I'm a keen fly fisherman.

Be careful with the screwdriver trick on Subaru filters as they have a sprung ball bearing value in some versions.

So took out black dash(yes my daughter named her after a my little pony) yesterday for her first run after all the work I have done. A quick trip to shell for some v max and then to sts tyres for wheel balancing. After I left there I headed for henfield for a little drive. After an initial warm up I gave her some beans to discover the clutch is slipping hard from 3rd gear up. There is a winning noise coming from the rear, maybe wheel bearings not to sure. And after I got back home my new left disc and caliper were stone cold, but the right one boiling hot and a load of new pad dust. Oh well I suppose it was to be expected, back to the drawing board and back on the axle stands. Sorry black dash more work is needed.

Coming along nicely, if the caliper is sticking it won't be helping the clutch. Seats look good, looks like you managed to make the rears fit as well.

Yeah managed to fit the rears as well took the backs of the old seats and refitted them. Then just put the rears in. Any idea of clutch prices and fitting guides or will it have to be a garage job. Think I will fix the brakes first then see were I am at

Full matt black wrap? Its amazing what a decent finish on the bodywork and a set of wheels will do for a car

No full Matt spray can job from local motor spares place. Took each panel off and bumpers and sanded down a little. No primer then took my time and gave it a go. Not a bad result for£50 of cans

good job on the paint - for the cutch the best 'home' method is to lift the engine away from the gearbox and fit the clutch that way - you have to get the car very high to drop the box.

Silly me I had just put the caliper on and twisted the brake line so no wonder it wasn't working. So left side front working just the right hand caliper that is not working as it should. Any one have a working standard front right caliper they would like to sell me please

So after a new caliper and brake bleed (via the wife pumping the brake pedal) she now stops as she should. So the only thing I need is a new clutch and fitting. Any advice on who to use for this and which clutch should I get as a standard replacement? Cheers guys

Exedy clutch is a good option - as for fitting it can be a DIY job or there are a few members up East Grinstead way that may be able to help out.

Alyn @ AS Performance is used by many of us on here for parts..

He deals with Exedy clutches and various others.

Cheers guys would try it myself but don't have the balls or tools to lift the engine out what should I pay a mobile mechanic or garage to do it if I supply the clutch?

My Mechanic took 2hrs... So I imagine 2-3hrs labour costs maybe?

If you go to a good subaru independent then you may pay a higher per hour cost than your local back street garage but they will be a hell of a lot quicker - the system most garages use to calculate job times says 7 hrs for an impreza clutch - as above good independents can do it in 3!
