Default unlocking phones

aaaaaaaaaaaages ago i got a new phone off of orange but never got it unlocked or registered. Its still in the box and havent even got it out to look at it. Was wondering if theres any way of unlocking it to get it to work even tho i was meant to register it with orange.

im no good when it comes to phones and technology so thought there could well be a nerd on here to answer my technophobe questions.

cheers

dave
