David Purely (the driver trying to put fire out) had a massive accident after this event whereby he went from over 100 mph to zero in 26 inches. He experienced over 178 G's and was seriously injured yet survived only to be killed in a plane crash.

Bloody hell. That was a life full of turmoil.

178 G's, every organ in his body must have been slammed so hard against his rib cage. Christ that must have been painful.

David Purley (who's father owned LEC refridgeration) lived in Felpham just outside Bognor Regis. Unfortunately he was killed while flying his stunt aircraft just off the coast at Bognor. I remember his Silverstone accident, as it happened just after Ronnie Peterson was killed in Italy due to complications when he broke a leg. Purley had 16 breaks in his and still made it.
