Default Smart motorways

Watched Pamarama last night, programme looked at the pro's and con's of smart motorways. Overall opinion was they are a menace. Deaths and near misses have soared. First ones had safety laybys every 600 yds,but that has been extended to 1.5 miles. Original concept was radar would be installed so that stationary vechiles could be instantly detected and the lane closed, but apparently this only exists on 2 sections. Advice when their was a hard shoulder was to exit your car on the non motorway side as quick as possible. Advice now is to remain in car with seatbelt on and wait to be rear ended.

I also watched this, nothing better than a hard shoulder for safety, they also said it could take upto 17mins to notice that you have stopped. They should have just added an additional lane and kept the hard shoulder.

They are extremely dangerous and I fear for people all the time when i see them stuck in the first lane (not always first lane)...

It must be terrifying stuck in your car waiting for a lorry to hit you !!!!
