Default X-Games 2012 Rallycross Jump Crash

Toomas Heikkinen has had a bad smash in the jump practise at X-Games 2012:

He escaped with a broken foot, fractured ribs and some internal bleeding.

Have got to ask the question: why were there no tyres or something on the edge of the landing ramp? And I hope someone at the GRC/X-Games is asking serious questions about whether "rallycross" in the US needs this silly gap jump.

Ouch, that doesn't look good

At that speed the edge of the ramp would act like a knife, they were very lucky that they carried enough speed for the front of the car to take the impact. A few mph less and the ramp edge would have gone straight through the windscreen/A pillar - and no cage will completely protect the driver in that scenario.
