Default What Oil and viscosity for Hawk STI ?.

Millers seems a popular choice, but what viscocity should I get ?.

50K miles, road car only with odd spirited driving. Probably change again in the summer irrespective of miles covered between now and then. So nothing silly expensive required. I prefer to change often rather then spend a fortune on oil and forget.

Here comes another oil debate

Personally, I prefer 15w50 and have always used Mobil 1 in the past, I tried that Bardahl 10w60 stuff which came with my Baffled Sump, but I didn't like it at all.

Lot's of people swear by Millers on here though as you say, there has to be something in that.

Apart from the fact its difficult to get hold of.

I have been using this for about 4 years Fuchs Titan Race Pro R 15w-50 Ester Synthetic Engine Oil.

I just went on opie oils and selected what it recommended.
I think their website defaults to calling it a STi Spec D.
I went for the motul......or was it millers.....can't remember.

I found it operated at a really high temp Ian. The oil temp was sat anywhere between 85-90 while the Mobil 1 sits around 75-80.

Has it been ok for you?

This is what I am going for next funnily enough. The fact you have been using for 4 years says how much you like it

It's what RCM recommend / sell.

Mobil 1 - dont mention that wee wee. I wouldnt use it i my lawn mower.

I wouldnt use what opie recommend due to them coming on forums and telling everyone they knew nothing and that we should use the oil grade subaru recommend.

I like and have seen good results both in normal use and high extreme temps and track use (racing not just track day) and on engines that have been stripped and check for the sake of it using motul 300v comp 15w50 and would highly recommend it.

I think my engine sounds quieter with it in, before I was running Magnatec 10/40.

All is good as far as I know and she still sounds as sweet as, but I dont have a oil temperature gauge so I would not know its running temperature.

I can't use it any more anyway, it's been discontinued.

Hence the reason I am switching to the Fuchs.

It's should be there or there abouts noise wise with the Magnatech, due to the same viscosity.

How often do you check your oil? Let me know what you find next time you do. Colour, smell etc.

I've just taken my Mobil 1 5w30 ESP out of my diesel Honda civic after a 1000 miles. The engine just didn't sound as smooth as the black crap that was already in it when i got the car.

Was told that Mobil 1 was ok to use by some tit in halfords from there computer system ( yes school boy errors i know using halfords knowledge but its only the daily hack and not a scoob )

Was told it had a Diesel particulate filter and the ESP range was needed, but spoke to Honda today and all uk spec civics don't have that filter in the exhaust so normal synthetic oil is needed and has more protection in it.

Replaced it with 0w30 Castrol edge recommended by Honda and so far it sounds so much better on tick over and once warm!

Can anyone explain the references to what the numbers of oils mean and what the W stands for, Am i right in saying the higher the number the thicker viscosity of oil???

My service booked is fully dealership stamped,

The oil gets changed every 6 months irrespective of mileage

current mileage is only just 36,000.

roughly speaking (albeit there is a lot more science involved) the first number (5, 10, etc) is how the oil reacts when cold and the second number (40, 50, 60) is how the oil reacts at higher temps / loads. the "w" is simply "weight"

we have been major distributors for both millers and Motul for years (far longer than the "fashion brigade" have been involved in them), and have also recently been appointed a "Shell Racing Soloutions" dealer (all race applications NO road, oils as well as fuels)

quite happy to discuss specific issues or builds as to 'best' recomend but we only sue these companies due to their heavy investment in both technology and quality ester basestock

Well that's a conclusive response - NOT lol . Basically very subjective both in terms of make and oil and viscosity.

I think 'll stick with millers or Motul as most specialists including above stock it and rarely gets a bad word. I have 2 ltrs of Motul 300V left in my garage but its 15w50.

I figure I won't be doing track work so need the oil to be most effective in a medium heat range which is where it will spend most of its time, so 60w is too high so I'll plumb for 50w.

Also in consideration we are heading into winter, I don't want oil thats like water that will give little or no protection on start up and short journeys, and don't want treacle so figure 10w v's the 15w would be better.

Bit of a mindfield really, but using the above logic. I think I'll be paying a visit to AP's store a visit to order myself up 5 litres of Millers cfs 10w50 and a oil filter.

just to add, generally speaking, winters/temps in the UK aren't really low enough to warrant a change to "winter" or "summer" oils............

even a 15w oil will be fine for cold UK use

goes without saying that we have on-going member deals available that normally better any "one-off" buys and we don't need any special codes or gimmicks - t/phone order will generally get you the best deal and happy to price match/beat on the odd occassion that there are unique offers around........
