It was a Simca 1000 special. Horrible thing. I used to practice in my mother's 1959 mini, which had a slipping clutch to keep me on my toes. The year after that I was driving my brother's Mini Cooper as he was working away. Great fun turning up to school in that

My Dad took his test in 1969 in the "school car"; a Renault 8 (I think) which had a notoriously rubbish gear box.

The examiner proudly told him he had one if them and asked my Dad what he thought of it.

My Dad had an Escort 1100 waiting for him at home, which he'd saved to buy. A far better and more accomplished machine. He patiently waited for the examiner to hand over the signed paperwork, then told him how **** the Renault was, with accompanying technical reasons.

Careful Steve, you know what they say about loose talk.

So, you must have been born around the time I passed my test. How old do I feel!

I passed three months to the day after my 17th birthday, which makes it really easy for me to remember the date.

Currently at 16 and a bit years, so approaching the point where I will have soon been in possession of a licence for more of my life than having not been in possession of one!

I met my wife the day I passed my test, we then got married on the same date 6 years later so can't really forget it, will be 25 years with a full car licence this year but was tearing up the village for 2 years before hand on my FS1E and then my DT125LC.

Passed my car test first time at 17yrs,4 months. Motorcycle test took two attempts. On the first attempt the examiner told me to go around the block 2 times and he would step out and I had to carry out an emergency stop. At the end of the 2nd lap I assumed something had gone wrong, speeded up and at the last minute he stepped out in front of me. Caught him a glancing blow,no really damage, but he still had to go to hospital to be checked out. He was fine, but I failed, but became a legend down the pub.
