Default Potential newbie

Greetings all,

Looking to buy my first scooby following the sale of my mr2 turbo.

Iv been directed here from surrey scoobies who I signed up to yesterday looking for advice on wether or not to buy a red 95 prodrive advertised on auto trader. Theyve all been very helpful and although Im dissapointed that iv been advised not to buy it im very grateful for their input as I dont want to waste my money.

They recommended I check out the cars for sale on here...

I'm not lookin to spend any more than 3k if I can help it, I prefer the classic shape but also don't mind the blob.

My main preference is a 4 seater (cudnt get the other half an lil man in the mr2), the last two cars iv owned hav been turbo so looking for another, needs to be 200bhp minimum but not looking for an animal due to runnin costs.

Would b grateful for any advice anyone may have...

Go for it, you'll love it. I had taken mine off the market but could still sell if the price was right.

to SeS fella!

Quite a few knowledgeable folks on here to help with something like this

I would say that you can find better than the car on A1autosherts aswell.

Some of the cars linked above by other members look like great examples.. think you need 10 or 15 posts to view further in the forum,

Welcome once again and good luck with the hunt

Welcome buddy!! you cant go wrong buying off regular members here!! most take alot of pride in there motors keeping them at a high standard, Barons is a nice tidy motor! not many tidy red ones about either, ideally ask what to look for and what to stay away from!! weve all done it! nothing worse than blowin your load and having to sort out bodged up mods ect good luck huntin mate you made a good choice goin for a scoob for that price you can get a nice sti import around 280bhp standard another one for that price to look out for is a import wrx v-limited which i had there 260bhp but have the close ratio box which makes them alot more fun to drive,

The Red car linked above from A1 to me does not look like a Prodrive Edition from that era.
It looks to be a UK Turbo 2000 with a few dress-up bits.
The Rear Spoiler is either a genuine Prodrive WR or a copy (there were a few copies about many years ago) and looks to be the only Prodrive item on it. It may be an original (an expensive) spoiler as the brake light looks to be slightly recessed, were the copies it sat more flush.

If the car were a Prodrive it would have a numbered plaque on the centre console and it would also have Prodrive Recaro seats, to the same design as the Series McRae.

The seats in it, are early WRX (1993 - Sept 1994), so it looks like the lesser spec UK grey seats (not buckets) were replaced with these. I doubt very much the Recaro's were replaced, as they are a far superior seat.

It is also unlikely to be 280BHP. Even with the Prodrive ECU modification (which was a very rare fitted option back then), they were only rated to 240BHP.

Saying all of the above, the car looks very clean for it's age, just a bad bit of false advertising.

It might just be bad lighting, but it also looks like a shocking paint difference between the boot and rear quarters.... bootlid swap to change the rear spoiler i guess.

I'd much rather buy a Subaru from a trustworthy person on a forum like this, personally. Welcome, btw

I thought the same as that, almost as if the boot and spoiler came off a pro drive car in red

Yeh thats the one, I can see why everyones doubtful of it. I was looking at the other pic of the rear sqaure on and was wondering if it was the lighting or if the boot was a different colour so glad someone else mentioned that.

Definitely gonna take the advise and steer clear I think. The hunt is on again!

Thanks for the links too but im I need to do some more posting before I can view them.

I think this is very sensible mate... Be patient and eventually you will find a clean example. And as already suggested, if you can stretch to a special edition (RA/R etc) then do it.

It's really not getting the use it should so could be interested in selling, it was up for Ł2800 but I'm open to realistic offers. I'll put the full ad in a PM to you seeing as you can't see it on here yet.

They seem to b the most common model in my price range? Not really that particular on the model but would like at least 200bhp and I do have a slight preference towards the prodrive style spoiler.

People have suggested the RA but these seem to be a tad pricy.

It's a gem - one to be treasured. If you will be parking in supermarket car parks etc, go for a lesser classic.

I'd look at sti's mate...Much better base model if you plan on modifying it. I've got a Turbo 2000, given the chance again i'd have bought an RA or Sti.

The turbo 2000's aren't poo tho are they Doobs? Yours is now banging out 345bhp. True tho that WRX, STI and there RA variants are better spec'd, but most cars will have already had mods, so it is swings and roundabouts.

Havnt seen many STi's and the ones I have seen seem expensive. Dictated by price but if i see one thats nice and in my budget then for sure Id go for one. My other problem is that im insanely impatient and its taken me about 2 months to decide I want a scooby, now I want to find one and preferably before the summer!

No.. Far from that!! I love mine, but by the time I've finished it will just be a Turbo 2000 shell with all forged and STI internals on an STI CDB.

In hindsight it would have been easier to buy an STI to start with. And saved be a couple of ŁK.

Looks good, however, I've never heard of a Dactek ECU, with the TD04 and equals and stainless exhaust I'd expect to see more like 270 bhp not the 250 quoted.

You'll not have anything usually with an import till its come in. If its had a rebuild by subaru4u then I'd expect receipts to prove that and its got some nice bits on it

I would give Subaru4U a call about it. No vested interest, but will know some of the history.

JGM remap and, as Chris says, some nice bits.

Worth investigating I would suggest. Have a chat with Matty4113 on SS. He picked up a nice one of similar age recently.

Sounds good mate apart from all the pimp my ride polished this that n the other lol!! might have high miles but if its been genuinly looked after and regular services miles are not really an issue not to me anway and if you like it go for it but as said before check out members motors as you know its goin to be a genuine one!! might pay you to look at red barons in person!!!!! i see it at the last meet and was a very tidy classic
