Default mystery cylinder in engine bay

ive been sorting a few odds n sods on my new wagon today and noticed something missing from my engine bay.
the first picture is a cylinder on my old wrx and i dont know what it is.
the second picture is my new wagon, which has an sti lump in it. as you can see the cylinder is missing.
does anyone know what it is? and does my wagon need it?

sure its the carbon canister to help get the fuel fumes at bay

yes its part of the emission system.............you'll have no issue without but link those pipes up so its "sealed"

I looped those pipes together and had fumes come into cockpit , so bad it made your eyes sting , ended up connecting canister back on.

you must have had some other issue as done it thousands of times over the last 12yrs or so...............

Wonder why that happened to mine then ? When disconected it hiss of air and smell of petrol to start with , perphaps something blocked ? its a mystery.

well, i'm pulling a few bits of the saloon b4 i scrap it so i'll keep the canister in my shed just in case
