Default Bluebell wood

Having spotted the Bluebells making an early appearance this year, I paid a visit to a Bluebell Wood I discovered near Groombridge. They need at least another week to "get there" really, but it gave me a chance to try a different approach to the standard shot.

I walked around the outside of the wood trying to create "windows" of bluebells using a shallow depth of field to throw foreground and background out of focus.

The first one is pretty close to what I was trying to achieve, the rest are just some other pics from the day.

Cheers mate

Do you know the "rule" with polarizers?

If not, for best results the lens want to be at 90 degrees from the sun, you then frame up and focus, then you rotate the end element of the polarizer until you have darkened into both far edges.

Check your screen after, if it look like the dark polarized edge is short of the edge od the sky, it just needs revolving round a bit further.

It's a bit of trial and error to start but you'll get the hang quickly. You won't regret getting one for sure. Bluebells would be a good tester for it

great pics Steve, really like the grass one (last pic) for some reason.

what shutter speed was the first one, it looks like the foreground has movement (breeze?) in it as well as being deliberately out of focus?

The last one really makes you stare into it, for me its trying to find that point at which the grass is most in focus. Plus the earthy lines draw you attention up the image to the horizon even though its blurry.

Cheers Steve I like the last one too.

The camera setting for the top pic are as follows:

f2.8 - 1/200 second - ISO 200 - @200mm

You are correct in the fact that there was a right to left breeze, this only shows on the foreground as the inside of the wood was obviously more sheltered.

I really like the lead in lines on this picture, it does draw you all the way to the end even though it is out of focus.

I am going back to take more pics this weekend at a much better time of day, about 6pm. Due to the orientation of the woods, the late evening sun will be streaming through the woods. I will also retake the last pic with a bit more depth of field, something like f5.6.

Lost me, I must read up about all this camera malarky and what does what, sounds complicated but like everything practice makes perfect.

I can see him now, a bluebell behind each ear, a summer dress and heels!
