Default Coolant

Evening all, had an issue where the coolant expansion tank has filled up and was bubbling with air, I'm just letting it cool down before opening anything up. Coolant was at correct levels to start with.
Any ideas

Replaced radiator cap and top tank cap. Drained and replaced coolant. All seems fine now. How often do caps fail or can hoses gradually let air in.

I had it a few years ago when on track a couple of times, where the expansion tank filled and overflowed, bubbling in bottle as well.

I've always assumed its an early sign of HGF but I've changed the radiator, hoses and coolant since then and it was fine on the last trackday i did - although it was in February so the ambient temp was much lower.

Fingers crossed, as I was quoted 1700 for head gasket.
