Default American Speedfest II – Brands Hatch

I missed this last year as it clashed with the Bromley Pageant of Motoring, but after a strong recommendation from Bandit I decided to give it a look. Predictably I had my camera with me and took a few snaps.

Forgive the lack of variety in my pictures: I was having a lazy day and didn’t fancy walking round the circuit!

The main attraction on track was the European NASCAR Championship. The NASCAR races were really entertaining…

…but it was “Bernie’s V8” – a Championship specifically catering for classic American cars – I was most interested in seeing. The classics were out a few times throughout the day, with some races specifically for classic saloon cars and others open for everything historic.

I think Can-Am is one of the most underrated Championships of all time, so I was really looking forward to seeing (and hearing) some Can-Am cars out on track. All of these cars were quick in their heyday, but some of the drivers were obviously taking it easy.

Happily not all of them were being cautious: Michele Liguori absolutely drove the wheels off his Lola in the first race of the day. It was only a short race, but he lapped everyone at least once! Great to not only see Can-Am cars on track, but see them driven hard as well.

Although it was a celebration of American cars, a few European cars managed to sneak onto the track, including a Mk.1 Escort…

…and one of my favourite cars of the day (and of all time) a Porsche 917K. This 917K is a replica (and it was plagued with electrical gremlins all day), but even when it’s stationary I still think this is one of the best looking race cars of all time.

The support for the NASCAR’s was completed by the BARC Quaife Intermarque Championship. This is a championship for space frame silhouette saloon cars.

I have to confess I spent more time trying to guess what each car was silhouetting than I did watching them racing!

Really enjoyable day out with some lovely motors to look at: cheers for the recommendation Bandit!

The Can-Am cars sounded superb. The Euro NASCAR's weren't as loud as I was hoping, but the racing was really good.

The Plymouth Superbird sounded ridiculous. It was so loud it physically hurt every time it came past!

Don't suppose you snapped any pics of a nice light metallic blue 67 Mustang convertible, think it was parked in the Mustang time line. Belongs to a friend of mine and she'd be chuffed to bits if anyone has any nice shots of it.

Sorry, I didn't. I'm not a massive fan of Mustang convertibles, so I'm certain I didn't take a picture of it!

That's the one, very nice car and pretty much original, right down to the radio, think they're on the hunt for a 67 Fastback as well so they can have his and hers.

Looks really nice Shane,I do love the older Mustangs and a GT 390 fastback would be in my garage if ever the numbers come up.
