Default The Bug...

Well, now I have finally got all of the parts on the car, I figured it was about time to start sharing some pics e.t.c.

So this was my 2002 STi Type UK Prodrive Edition Bug the day I bought it...

The previous owner had done 9k in 4 years, but didn't really wash or clean it.

First job was to give it a good scrub!

Now I am slightly OCD when it comes to maintaining my cars, so it got booked in for Cam / Timing Belt change, with tensioners, new water pump and all the necessaries e.t.c.

At this point I would like to say all bar one part for the car has been bought from Alyn @ AS Performance - huge help, always great prices, and very very friendly.

Heres all the old parts:

Next as it was mechanically sound, I decided it was time to get serious with the cleaning and sorting the bodywork.

There were a few scuffs on the bumpers, boot, door e.t.c and the paint was very flat...

So a trip to my local bodyshop (Thanks Drew and Aaron @ D&A Customs): and it came out looking like this:

Then after a few days - I decided to get the machine polisher out, and start bringing that O2C Rally Blue to life...

Next on the list were front and rear strut braces:

Next came my first SES meet - the SRR Day in July 2014 - I had no expectations of what the car would produce, and although I knew there was a back box on it, wasn't aware of any other mods.

I was more than pleasantly surprised when the car kicked out the following:

Then I started trying to make some sensible mods that were semi future proof for when I decided to up the power:

Booked back in with my mechanic friend Jules and in went the Pink Box Clutch and lighter flywheel. At the same time, I had a full service, with PFR7B plugs going in, coolant, Millers CFS Nanotech 10w50 oil and filter, and new Do-Luck air filter and fuel filter.

Inbetween - even though it was kept in the garage, I always keep it covered up to keep the dust off - yes im sad

The next area of attention was the suspension. The car was 12yrs old, and feeling quite "Loose" when driving along. A quick chat with Alyn and £££ later, and I had Eibach ARB's front and rear, Whiteline drop links, whiteline Anti lift kit, Whiteline steering rack bushes, whiteline gear mount bushes, whiteline ARB mounts, and generally every bush under the car replaced. Also at this time came the 4x new Wheel bearings, HEL brake Lines, Brake Fluid drain and replace.

Then came XMas - and after boring my parents and GF with car parts being the only thing on my list, I was lucky enough to get Silicone hoses, 290ltr Scoobyworx Fuel pump, Brake Discs, PFC Brake Pads, Turbosmart 3 port Boost Solenoid.

Then in Feb I had to have more surgery - and so post operative recoup was in order - which consisted of a new Cobra 3" system with Sports CAT, HS Trick Up pipe, Ported headers - again all supplied by Alyn.

What followed was a new HKS SSQV - im sad, I like the noise!

And some Morrettes, which were sprayed up by D&A Customs..

Then last Sat, and this Sat were spent back down with my mechanic Jules, fitting all of the parts, which had been updated to include new Phenolic gaskets, inlet gaskets, exhaust gaskets, rocker cover gasket kits, another oil and filter change, another coolant change.

And that's pretty much where I am as of tonight...

Morrettes haven't been fitted yet, but will be in a few weeks.

The car is booked in for an opensource remap with Duncan (Racedynamix) at SRR on Fri 22nd May.

In the future - its booked in for a near on full respray (apart from boot and rear doors) on 26th oct, and I plan on having the wheels refurbed.

Cheers for looking!

Ryan

Definitely a car to be proud of.

Looks incredibly tidy and, as said above, some sensible "tinkering".

State of play after Duncan @ Racedynamix mapped the car...

Next mods are some coilovers - injectors sent to Lateral to come back 830cc, and an MD321T turbo... then map tweak...

Nice one Ryan. 330bhp is pretty good for the vf35 so i'd be happy with that - especially with the sports cat.

Look forward to seeing it with the morettes

Thanks Steve - they were due to be fitted this coming Saturday - but whilst I was away the weekend - "someone" (SHE shall remain nameless!) moved the mondeo and cracked the front bumper into the gate! so morrette labour funds will now go onto mondeo bumper labour funds! grrrrr - should be fitted end of June though after payday

PFC Z pads and quality set of standard discs - alyn supplied both...

Thinking I'll be needing some better discs when I up the power again

On turbo Id find a sc40 and stick that on . Best spool I've seen on a number of 2ltr scoobs I've seen . See around 410 to 430 on vpower and upto 470 on 20% meth
I'd also advise 330 ap's

I know I know...
Ap's ? (Bigger calipers?)

Only reason I haven't bought the bigger brakes is that the discs and pads were only bought at Xmas, and have only done 750 miles since then ! ha ha

But I understand what your saying - no point going faster if I can't stop

Scooby clinic
They don't do them now , why I don't know they where awesome . I also think the sc42 from 3 to 5 years back where better than the ones available now . Find a second hand sc40 you won't be disappointed 👍

Hi C.J - thanks for the info...

So whats the main difference between the SC40 / 42 and the MD321T - spool up time?

The sc40 & md321h are similar same as sc42 & md321t
I just think the sc40 is your best option from all the time I spent at the rollers with simon

Missed his thread somehow.

Great thread Ryan and the car is coming on treat. Some nice mods and nice to see the car looking pretty standard instead of chavved up.

I bet it felt totally different after the recent map. Nice figures

Thanks Steve,

I must admit at first I was disappointed as it felt very sluggish - and didn't seem to have the oooomph (technical term there!) is used to have..

however looking at the dyno graph, the torque curve is much smoother - and so by altering my driving style (holding out longer in 3rd and 4th) yes it feels a totally different car...

Hi Dave,

It does have a certain "rumble" to it now...Although yours is a lovely sounding motor I have to say - can always tell when your pulling up to a meet

have to say very very impressed with the cobra system as a whole - Alyn supplied at a great price, and it bolted on with no issues at all! great system...

Well next stage of the project has been ordered via alyn -

Eibach pro-street S coilovers

And eibach camber bolts:

And a set of Speedline Turini 18x8 2120 alloys in gold:

Alyn did me an amazing deal as always on both...

Will post pics when they arrive

Ha ha

They will be my daily wheels and the 17's will have track rubber fitted and used as track wheels (cheaper when replacing tyres!)

Very true! I'm using the turini's as track wheels as they are not in as good nick as the larger 8.5" rims

Wow 8.5 - my wallet couldn't stretch to 8.5 18's - still in hoping the 18x8 will be a noted improvement on the stock 17's

Hoping the eibach kit will make a nice difference as well - although fixed damper, and onto original top mounts - the write up and alyns advice seems sound enough for what I need

U think so?

I am so clueless I started reading all the write ups and tbh besides the name and build quality couldn't see what I was paying £200 more for over BC's and Tein's...

Tein's have dampening adjustment and top mounts, BC's could have been the inverted type with top mounts for same money but tbh Alyn has never given me duff info and so I trust him impeccably...

Reassuring to know someone else thinks they are an ok buy so thanks Dave

Looking very nice and looking forward to see it on Thursday. Plus as for coilovers I had BC's on mine but in the end I had to change them for KW's 3 as I thought the BC's were crap so I think you have made the right choice on Eibach pro-street S coilers
