Default Specialist Insurance

Does anyone know of any specialist insurance companies that would entertain me? Im 21, had my license for 4 years. I have 0 no claims due to the fact I never drove much so was always a named driver until now.

I also got a month ban for speeding in 2011 (0 points).

I know its not the best record but so far been using moneysupermarket and even though the prices are affordable I would prefer to go with a specialist. Dont know if Keith would insure me?

My insurance would be paid annually if that makes any difference.

Give Gary Moulson (Moley on here) a call or PM him. Just make sure you ask for Gary and mention us. Always sorted mine for me and alot less hassle.

Spoke to him this morning by coincidence.

I think even he may struggle with a 21 year old. From memory that's below his minimum age for the better policies, but still worth a try.

Best to phone, and be persistent - he's a busy bunny.

If Gary at Keith Michaels can't help you out, try Adrian Flux. They're who I used for my first year of ownership as no one else was interested (32 at the time, full no claims, record clean as a whistle).

keep trying with Gary, he's hard to get hold of, but it is because he is so successful at getting good quotes for most people.

I'm very glad I took the effort as he has been great so far.

Expect some hefty quotes, a modded WRX will normally cost more to insure than a standard STI.... add the lack of no claims and a previous driving offence and it'll be £££ time i expect.....

Whats the best price you've had so far?

PPP or proper modded ?

PPP is a 'standard' model usually in insurance terms. Well, my WRX300 was anyways.

Try putting a parent on the quote, can sometimes reduce it down. Also try to garage the car and keep your mileage down. The speeding will affect you for up to 3 yrs with most Insurers especially along with your age and the fact the car is modded.

Try Gary. I'm a Broker but I don't specialise in modded cars. Happy to help though if you want any advice.

When you say you have been a named driver until now.... I assume this car has been insured under a parents name?

Having no NCD is tough I know, for a modded Scoobi a a lot like to see at least 3 yrs NCD and a cat 1 alarm on the normal insurance market. Careful of the hidden excesses and terms on the online stuff.

Some companies like to see a history of performance car ownership/driving too.

To be honest mate, at 21 with no NCD you are facing a hefty bill, but you'll soon forget about that when you get out in the car.

Ginola just tapped me on the shoulder and said this is Craig's car?

Definately go to Gary then and take some contraceptives (kidding)

Gary has the rates and the correct insurers for you.

Yeah its craigs car. Best I have at the moment is 2800 a year with mods declared (was quoted 3500 for a standard sti import classic).

I understand this is a lot and am willing to pay this and am not complaining, just trying to find someone cheaper so please dont tell me I'm stupid for paying this much .

I want to get on my own policy and lump the first years extortionate cost as next year when I'm 22, 1yncb plus my ban was 3 ago my insurance will hopefully drop by quite a lot.

Looks like I will have to just pay what they charge this year.

Plan.

Whatever you do, if you are to be the main driver, make sure that this is how the policy is set up. To not do so is called 'fronting' and will result in all sorts of trouble coming your way !!

Cool beans.

As you say, sucking it up for a year (and keeping safe) may be the best short and long term strategy matey.

Out of interest, was the £2800 quote for fully comp insurance? I was in a similar situation to you when I was 21 (minus the speeding ban) and I was getting quotes for that amount for unmodded hot hatches etc. If I had said the word 'Impreza' I'd have still been able to hear them laughing after they had hung up the phone!

Anyway, if you are willing and able to pay that amount for a years cover then I say good luck to you!

Ah ok, that starts to make a bit more sense. I'm sure you know the potential pitfalls of TPF&T so won't go into any of that. I don't know what the value of the car is, but I believe some insurers will not give a TPF&T quote where the value of the car is above a certain threshold (used to be about £5k).

Sky Insurance (http://www.skyinsurance.co.uk/car-insurance.html) might be worth a call as well as the others mentioned above. They insured me aged 22, fully comp on a group 17 vehicle without requiring and history of 'performance' car ownership. Ok, it was a Civic Type R and not an Impreza, but they insured me when no one else wanted to know. Like you, I had to pay a high price, but with retrospect it was worth it.
