Default GC8 replacement exhaust question

just bought a new exhaust for my 94/95 Import WRX from Japspeed

i got this catted downpipe. when it turned up, the sticker said 1998 to 2000.
I know it should fit physicaly, but, i have an exhaust temperature sensor about half way down my exhaust pipe.
the new one has 2 boss', one down at the end, and one on the bellmouth.
the one down the bottom is too far for the lead on the temperature probe so i guess i'll have 2 stick it in the bellmouth.

anyone know if this will be ok? or even better still, anyone fitted this part 2 a 94/95 GC8 ?


I also have a rattle on the exhaust heat shield on the header pipes (bottom-front drivers side)
Usual thing, rusted round one of the bolts and rattles at certain revs. Is it ok to just remove the heat shield? Or should I replace it

temp prob not needed, it a 'CAT on fire' probe.
Just dicsonnect it and tuck the wires away and put a bung in the lower hole.

I like they way they label it 1998-2000. From 1996-2000 they are all the same, and none have the requirement for the hole in the bottom of the downpipe.

Thats probably there when newage people want to fit the Classic single piece downpipe and centre section, to allow them to fit the rear lambda sensor.

that makes me feel a lot better, however, my exhaust like almost everyones pops n bangs when rolling off the gas. i assume thats not enough 2 set the cat on fire right ?

and my car is a 94/95 not 96-00. whats the difference, the mounting point on the down pipe ?

Pop's and bangs are normal, especially as they over-fuel as standard.
Mountings from 93 - 00 are the same (sorry 96-00 was a typo).

Dont forget to remove the turbo heatshield first, It makes thins ALOT easyier, i had to remove intercooler aswell but i think mines bigger in a ver 5,

Yes defo remove intercooler to gain easier access to the top side.
Soak top bolts, where fits to turbo with WD40 for 24 hours if possible.
Remove all external heatshields (not the one clamped round the OE cat pipe).
Gearbox mount/bolt may be siezed, so just cut the bracket away.
Get ready to catch it as OE pipe is v.heavy.

Use good quality 14mm socket and ring spanner, to prevent chaffing the nut/bolt heads.


Don't botther to re-fit heat shields, except for top funel one. this will require a trim around the bottom if fitting over a bell mouthed downpipe.

The intercooler and the heatshields had to be removed from my blue classic when i had the exhaust done, only thing is with japspeed they have a tendancy not to fit properly and need abit of persuasion to go on

well, had 2 put off fitting it till next weekend.
the downpipe has 2 boss' in it for sensors, and it only came with one plug. spent the whole of saturday trying 2 find something 2 plug it, but it would appear to be an odd size. by the time i gave up searchin on saturday, it was 2 late 2 weld it up n fit it so i had 2 put it off till sunday. but as i did the garden saturday afternoon instead n got burnt in the sun, i was in 2 much pain 2 do it sunday so looks like i'm gonna have 2 do it next weekend instead !

An old spark plug often fits the hole for now until you find a tidier bung.

at last its finaly on!!!!
apart from one bolt which needed to be split in order 2 remove the bellmouth from the turbo flange, it was easy enough 2 do.
sounds kinda mental wiv the bung out, & turbo spoolup is noticeably better.

one side affect of having an exhause wiv a 3 inch bore tho.
ive noticed horses seem to feel inadequate when the scoob is near
