Still having trouble with my sti !!
I'm really regretting getting rid of my version 5 sti to get this bug eye sti I had the version 5 for 2 years and never had a single problem with it I've had the bug eye less than a week and already I've had a misfiring problem in all gears which was cured by fitting new plugs then I had the bolts in the Break caliper sheer resulting in the caliper coming off while driving and locking the wheel up had to fit a new caliper as it was beyond repair now I think I've got a problem with my actuator or a over boosting problem in 5th and 6th it sounds as if the dump valve is fluttering and is holding back slightly if u depress the pedal slowly it doesn't do it it only does it when u plant your foot to the floor and only in 5th and 6th.am I right in thinking the boost levels are higher in the higher gears it's boosting at 16-17 psi in the lower gears but in 5th and 6th it can go over 20 psi this is when the problem occurs has any one got ant idea what could cause this ? Any other time I would just put the car in to get it fixed but after buying a caliper plugs and coil packs and £170 for a cow boy mechanic to look at the car and then after 2 days say they can't find anything wrong with it funds are running a bit low any help would be appreciated

To be honest I'm not sure there is a dyno print out but it's only a power run no mapping was done it made 347bhp it has a 100cell sports cat fitted 3inch stainless system k&n typhoon induction kit and a hks bov I replaced all the vacuum lines today just incase there was a leak but no change it's as it the waste gate is fluttering open and closed ? If it is over boosting would the ecu cut the fuel or open the waste gate ?

On classics fuel cut not sure in new age

What fuel you using??

I'd check that's not a fake ssqv also and leaking

If you can make it to eastbourne your more than welcome to borrow my oem valve for a test if needed as my car is coming of the road due to clutch going and got a new turbo, up pipe and decat to be fitted,

Have you cleaned the maff seeing as it's running that k&n?? That would be a good starting point for me

Sounds like boost is over achieving target in the high gears and the ecu is struggling to control it.
Is the boost fluctuating on the gauge and pulsing/surging ? |
#17
|
||||
|
||||
Yeah is surges but the gauge doesn't fluctuate too much
And I've cleaned the maf a few times but made no difference |

You haven't binned your pill when you swapped the pipes over?

does it do this when trying to use large throttle openings at medium revs??
if you drop down the gears and run straight through it never occurs?? VF35's are notorious for this when mapped and its simply cavitation

Yep that's exactly what's happening if I change down a gear it revs through it

Just done a search on google and found this http://m.scoobynet.com/showthread.php?t=993298
Would a silicone intake really cause this problem ? |

I think it's a £40 sat at SRR this weekend, and there are a few spaces left, might be worth getting it on the rollers and checked. I'm not sure but I think Duncan (Racedynamix) might be there to map a couple of legacies so between him and Charlie you could get a good diagnosis. Otherwise I'd give Simon a call and get the map checked or the original mapper.

They can suck in on themselves under boost sometimes, messing the airflow up.
Trouble is, there a pain in the **** to change, as the inlet manifold has to come off.

What's this pill thing people have mentioned is at like a 1 way valve thing I've just checked all the vac lines and I can't see anything ?

it's a restrictor pill, it will have very specific dimensions for the model / year if on standard turbo

nice link
Domo, i question your decision to go from classic to bug, on aesthetics alone |

|

MY01-05 STi ... 2 port solenoid 0.9mm restrictor fitted between the turbo and the tee piece
|
#33
|
||||
|
||||
In the 3mm Id rubber / silicone tube between the turbo & the t piece which then also goes to the actuator and 2 port solinoid

I wish I'd of stayed with the classic I loved it but just fancied a change I've always liked the bug eyes but I must admit having all the problems I've had has put me off it a bit I'm gonna give it a propper going over tomorrow hopefully I won't find anything else that needs doing thanks for the link will have another look tomorrow but im pretty sure I haven't got a restrictor fitted

Have a pill here
Most of your problems are from lack of knowledge of you and the last owner so un fair to blame the car . |

I'm not saying it's the car at fault I love driving it just after the problems I've had it's just a bit off putting

I appreciate it can be a pain when things go wrong, I sulk like a kid! Persevere with it though and once it's all sorted you'll be smiling from ear to ear

Quote:
The pill is there to 'restrict' the amount of pressure seen by the actuator NOT to restrict boost. The smaller the hole the more the boost. Stock restrictor are 1 - 1.2mm bore depending on model. A similar restrictor on a pre facelif classic works the opposite way i.e it does restrict the boost. but it is a larger bore (around 2mm IIRC). The pill may be partially blocked with oil/crud so worth a spray through the pipes and also the Boost control solenoid with carb cleaner. The pill is in the rubber hose next to the white t-piece that connects the turbo to the actuator. This is all assuming you are stil running the standard 2-port boost control solenoid and that it hasn't been upgraded to a 3-port. If it has a 3-port it may or may not have a restrictor depending on the mapper/mapping. |
