Followed by this 2 days later!

I'm now starting my Engine rebuild project earlier than planned!

I two main options in mind right now.....

2.1 Stroker either using my block or a CDB both with my heads

Forged 2.5 with my heads

Cost wise not a lot between them and already know of at least 2 forged 2.5 short engines second hand. Will keep you posted!

Steve_PPP 03-06-2010 08:13 AM

any news on when the car will be back yet?

Chunk 03-06-2010 08:37 AM

Modified 2.5's have been proven time and time again in the bugeyes, i'd go for that

No news yet will be chasing today, Still dithering on 2.5 or 2.1 - think I may have found a way to pay for it though! Liking the 2.1 option as it's cheaper and I can get a full long engine built ready to drop in. Although Jimmy's Cosworth 2.5 option is very appealing!

You can't go wrong with either the engine tuner engine or the cosworth....would be nice to have 'cosworth' on the boot though!

I have a feeling you will be eeking in front soon with the power!:wedgie:

SpecB 03-06-2010 09:35 AM

Car is with the repatriation company in Germany now, will be back in a week or so.

Cosworth is definitely my currently preferred option but is a fair bit more than the 2.1, with a 2.1 I could probably get either a 6spd or the Scoobyclinic 5 spd kit fitted at the same time. If I go Cosworth I'll need to go easy until I can get the box sorted!

worzel 03-06-2010 09:47 AM

What are you hoping to achieve with the re-build. What are your targets?

C. J. 03-06-2010 10:00 AM

2.35.....

Because you do it once instead of doing a 2.5 then wanting a more safe engine .
Not that i'd know about that !
If he wants a a cheap option why is he looking at cosworth
Eureka's short engine would be a good buy with a bit of bartering

Anger 03-06-2010 11:17 AM

how much power do you want from the build ?

Anger 03-06-2010 11:53 AM

Engine tuner and lots of other tuners have been running over 550 bhp on 2.5's for quite a while now.... All depends on what the car is going to be used for and power targets

Crowman 03-06-2010 12:38 PM

Be diferent from the rest and go for a 2.45:whistle:

Tyler 03-06-2010 01:00 PM

Good luck mate, on the the build and deciding on which route to go...

simonairheadz 03-06-2010 02:26 PM

buy a track car?

SpecB 03-06-2010 03:58 PM

Car's back Monday or Tuesday next week. As for spec I want an engine that will pull well across the rev range and be 500BHP capable but run in the region of 450/450 for daily use. Plan is to get the engine sorted ASAP but run with the current turbo, injectors and ecutek. Then it's a case of sorting the gearbox (6 or uprated 5 speed) and then I'll probably go FMIC, larger injectors and MD321T (or similar) possibly on Syvecs to get the 450/450 goal.

Currently looking at a forged 2.5 from Williams Motorsport to the following spec:
  • EJ257 Block (used)
  • Crossdrilled Nitrided Crank (new)
  • ACL Black Race bearings
  • Forged Steel rods (Williams) with ARP bolts
  • Wossner or Mahle pistons (depending on availability)
  • High Pressure Oil Pump
  • Kinetic Head Gaskets
  • Water pump
  • Cambelt
  • ARP Head bolts (11mm)
My heads refurbished, skimmed and new valves etc. all assembled as a long block engine and delivered back to me, all I'd have to do is remove the long block then refit on return followed by a nice safe JGM map. All in £3.5K

Eureka's engine is a good option but would involve having to get the heads sorted myself and also refitting the heads to the block plus the timing belts, jobs I'm not that confident with. Also Williams will be able to get the compression ratio right with the head gaskets if they have the block and heads to re-assemble as a unit.

C. J. 03-06-2010 04:09 PM

Why not get his block and get them to do the head work ?

SpecB 03-06-2010 04:12 PM

Was thinking of going for his block and sending my heads to these guys http://www.cncheads.co.uk/subaru_impreza.html to get them fully sorted.

How much hassle is reassembling the heads to the block and refitting timing belt etc?

C. J. 03-06-2010 04:17 PM

not much
otherwise happy to sell mine as a long block

eureka 03-06-2010 07:25 PM

put post on other thread re my engine
does come with belt tensioners ect

another 1200quid for the above seems excessive when all you need to do with mine is bolt the heads on and mine comes with all the above apart from rcm 12mm oil pump and far better parts

SpecB 10-06-2010 06:52 PM

Just ordered my engine!!!
  • EJ257 Block (used)
  • Crossdrilled Nitrided Crank (new)
  • ACL Black Race bearings
  • Forged Steel rods (Williams) with ARP bolts
  • Wossner or Mahle pistons (depending on availability)
  • High Pressure Oil Pump
  • Cometic Head Gaskets
  • Water pump
  • Cambelt
  • ARP Head bolts (11mm)
  • Oil Modine
  • AVCS Heads (V9 Sti)
  • Baffled sump

Should be a couple of weeks to build, just got to get mine out and ready for collection! Then I'll be onto JGM for the Syvecs!!

C. J. 10-06-2010 07:06 PM

cool
engine hoist in the garge if you need it
Would go with low silicone Mahle pistons if it was me , high silicone ones only good for 450bhp ish over that people have had problems . Also if Mahle are good enuff for Ferrai there good anuff for me . Only thing with the low silicone is there very forge sound till up to temp but then are good for 1000bhp !!!!!!
have you gone for JDM heads as they seem to be better castings ?
Also if you want Syvecs get it ordered

SpecB 10-06-2010 07:22 PM

It'll be a while before I can get the mapping done so I'll be in touch with Simon once my engine is out of the car and enroute to Williams.

Andy is suppling the heads for me from an engine he's just had in, basically I lucked out as he has most of the parts in stock at pre, exchange rate increase prices and just got a vgc STi engine in with AVCS heads and already has a 2.5 block stripped and cleaned! (the heads I'm getting for less than Saj's prices!)

Will your hoist fit in the boot of the wagon?

Plus any tips on either cleaning out my turbo or a local place that will 'refurbish' it to get the contaminated oil out?

C. J. 10-06-2010 07:24 PM

yep with the seats down

SpecB 15-06-2010 07:14 PM

Finally got the car into my garage, big thanks to Barnham Trailer hire for the very reasonable price to hire the car trailer!! Will start posting pics as I take the inlet side off the engine and then will be begging for favours when it's time to lift the engine!!

Let me know if you want a hand mate, like i said before - i'm no mechanic but i can help out and its the best way to see how a scoob is bolted together!

SpecB 16-06-2010 06:44 PM

Spent about an hour on her tonight, Got the Intercooler, header tank, washer bottle and air box off. Started undoing the wiring harness and vac lines etc. ready to pull the inlet off tomorrow. Taken lots of pics and made lots of notes but all going pretty well so far as the inlet was only off last year so I'm pretty happy with it so far, any ideas what to do with the alternator, A/C pump and PAS pump?

SpecB 17-06-2010 05:53 AM

Look good James, I've already got mine in the build process though - the base build should be ready by the middle of next week then once my engine is with him should only be a further week until I have it back!
Any help more than welcome, I should have the inlet off by the weekend - then I'm working blind!! Not sure when I'm going to go for the engine removal though as I'm pretty busy at the weekends at the moment possibly not until July now, not sure it's an evening job!

C. J. 17-06-2010 08:45 AM

You may want to leave the inlet manifold on till the engines out or you may find that you have nothing to fix the hoist too !

wagon man 17-06-2010 01:03 PM

good luck

good luck on building your new engine mate

SpecB 17-06-2010 07:25 PM

Plea for help time!!

When's good for me to come up and borrow your hoist Chris and is anybody free any evening next week to help get the engine out?? I'm solid the next two weekends and need the engine out ASAP!

Mortster 17-06-2010 08:11 PM

Ive got next week off Nick, so any evening next week is fine with me to come down.

Steve_PPP 17-06-2010 11:04 PM

what evening you thinking Nick/Nick? :)

C. J. 18-06-2010 08:37 AM

Any time you want give us a call or if you give us the keys i'll take it out for you in the week

SpecB 19-06-2010 06:15 AM

I'm looking at Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday - I'm going to get straight home from work so should be starting at around 4pm. C.J. I'll call you later today and try to get up Either Sunday or Monday evening to pick up the hoist.

Mortster 19-06-2010 07:29 AM

Free all of those, just let me know .

Steve_PPP 19-06-2010 10:12 AM

i can get there about six on tues/thursday but should have wednesday off work so can be there at 4..

although the england game kicks off at 3 :paranoid:

SpecB 19-06-2010 07:21 PM

Scrub Wednesday I'm at work until 8!

SpecB 20-06-2010 08:36 AM

Looks Like Tuesday is the best bet - I'll be pulling the alternator etc today or tomorrow then it should be ready to lift on Tuesday. I should be home by 4pm ready to make a start early doors!

Sian wants to know who may be coming to help or stand giving 'useful' advice so she can sort the catering!

Mortster 20-06-2010 08:57 AM

I'll be down to help, pm me the postcode.;-)

SpecB 22-06-2010 09:56 PM

Cheers for the help guys, almost got there - just need to get one more bolt out of the downpipe, then it's up-pipe, turbo and drivers side header and I think I'm ready to unbolt the gearbox and lift the engine out!! Decided to give up today as the car was only on a trolley jack and the bolt needs to be accessed from under the car and will take some force to get undone so I need to sort some Axel stands so I feel safer!!

Crowman 22-06-2010 10:13 PM

I got axle stands and trolley jack if you need them mate

Steve_PPP 22-06-2010 10:53 PM

tell Sian cheers for the bbq food :ok:

hope that last bolt in the downpipe doesn't prove to be too much of a sod when you've got the car up on axle stands!
