Underside Restoration

Alright peeps, what are peoples experiences of underside restoration, either DIY or at a garage. The WR1 does have a bit of what I would describe as surface rust on the underside and I have not a clue how to address it myself or if it's just better to take it somewhere to have it dealt with. What would be the cost of such a task.

I've seen some posts from Surrey Subaru of a restoration they have done including Underseal - I think I was quoted around £300 for an undersea of my Legacy. May be worth giving them a shout?

Some argue that powder coating is the way to go on suspension arms/subframes etc. Others argue that the specialist chassis paints are more durable as being softer and more elastic they can absorb stone chips etc. better without cracking and the then flaking off.

I think it depends on how deep your pockets are, you see a lot of the P1 guys completely stripping the underside of the car, painting the underside, re-plating all the nuts and bolts, powder coating the arms, brackets, mounts, subframe etc and replacing all the bushes, I should think you're well into 4 figures by that point though.

Krissyb did a good thread on his car, all done on the drive on axle stands as well.

Cheers - I may see if I can get a quote to get it done, else never ever look at the underside which is a far cheaper option.

Rather underneath was mint with rougher paint work than over way round lol

Do it yourself at least you knows it's done right I've seen some pics of scooby been done by the experts and they coated everything less the exhaust lol I will be doing the FOZ myself when the weather is better .

mine has no seal underneath and I’m in 2 minds to do it or not
1 part of me thinks don’t do it and just keep it clean underneath with decent washing a few times a year as sealing it can sometimes trap the moisture in side
But then the uk roads have so much crap on them I just don’t know what to do for the best

Scott.T 21-03-2019 07:19 PM

Just clean off and use underseal (the hamerite version as it paints on better)

A few pics of mine on Page 6 & 7 : http://www.southeastscoobies.co.uk/v...?t=9624&page=6

Mine was stripped completely underneath taking off old underseal, literally everything removed, nuts and bolts all new or replated, everything powder coated except for rear subframe which was a new one. New bushes in literlly everything underneath. New brake pipes, new brake pipe clips etc etc
It took a very long time, used thinned raptor in body colour and a few coats, then sealed all gaps again using an anti corrosive clear wax.
