MAF issues

After reading through The Gimps post over on Surrey, looks like my issue might be a dodgey MAF. The problems he had with his car are almost identicle to mine.

So instead of getting a spoiler this month, looks like Im spending a fortune at Subaru.

Empty ( ish ) roads on the way home from the meet on sat gave me the chance to give it some beans, CEL popped on again.

About £250 odd arnt they?

C. J. 29-11-2009 06:16 PM

You could go see saj at jap performace

Mortster 29-11-2009 06:30 PM

Is it wise to get those second hand? Could end up with a faulty one again?

Scooby Wez 29-11-2009 06:35 PM

It's best to get new as i found out no guarantee with a s/h one. Also if you go to Jap make sure you phone them first to see if they have the part, then phone them again before you leave to make sure. Then drive a 70mile round trip to be told sorry don't have them they were also top prices

MAF for a 99> is around £70 as it's inserts into the MAF housing rather then a seal unit in the MAF tube as per Pre99. These were around £250-£300.

I thought you had sorted your problemwhen you found the split hose ?

if it's still the 'bank lean' code then I would suspect either a boost/vacum hose problem or the front o2 sensor.

Dukeboy may have a spare o2 sensor, as he changed his and it ended up being OK. The fuel pressure reg vacum hose was the problem.

Wont boost past 5 PSI now, both Lamda and MAF gone?

Jolly Green Monster 12-12-2009 11:58 PM

Lambda won't stop it boosting.

maf will.. but also check your inlet pipe.. if it has a split (check around the turbo jubilee clip in particular) and check all the breather pipes are on.. if the turbo is sucking in air through a split of pipe off it will be like a failed maf..

Also it is fine to clean the newage ones.. use brake or carb cleaner in a spray can.. remove maf and spray etc..

Well, I got a intake pipe from Saj today, but how cold is it.....So I'll try and fit it Thursday, so if it solves the problems.

While I was there I couldnt help myself, and picked up a Zero Sports Rad Top cover aswell...:-)

worzel 14-12-2009 05:14 PM

Mate, it's nowhere as cold as it's gonna be from Thursday onwards.

Max daytime temp from Thursday 2 C.

Did you have to remortgage your house to get them

Mortster 14-12-2009 08:04 PM

Wasnt that expensive. I did get a funny look from Michelle though, when Saj called me by my first name....

I got the ' How many times have you been here ' on the way home...

Jolly Green Monster 14-12-2009 08:12 PM

were there splits in old one then?

Mortster 14-12-2009 08:52 PM

On close inspection, or as close as you can look while its still on the car. It looks like theres a tiny split under the jube clip. Theres also a very small 'splatter' of oil on the turbo house like its been blown there over time.

Do the uprated ones, ie Autobahn or Perin ones actually give any advantage?

Jolly Green Monster 15-12-2009 09:25 AM

the samco ones work well but can cause surge and need mapping for..

the cheaper autobahn maybe fine but seen some stuff suck shut

perrin should be good

Update...

Well, its been 48hrs since i put in a new MAF, and OMG! I cant remember the last time getting in the car put a smile on my face each time.

Just in time for the RR sesion on Sunday too. :-P

Now to sort the bit of the car that Michelle has wanted done for ages...the spoiler.

DukeBoy 15-01-2010 09:36 PM

Glad you got it sorted, now get that spoiler done

Bit late, but if you order 2X MAF (one for the glovebox ;) ) from subaru, you should get a volume discount. I did. I also replaced the torx bolts with hex box so I can keep an allen key in the glovebox too. Hasn't blown for a year, but don't want to limp home if I'm hours away from home.
