Horrid Whining Noise !! help what is it ?

Hiya,
Could i please get any ideas to my lovely Whining noise i get from my baby scooby :( its a 2002, 60,000miles....
It whines when i put my foot down (not necessarily booting it) and when its coming to slow down, im very worried its the turbo, or possibly the Alternator ?

Any thoughts ?
:thanx: :)

Does it do it with the gears engaged??

Steve_PPP 13-08-2010 11:30 PM

I agree with Nick ^^ a lot of scoobs get a whining noise on the over-run (when the car is still in gear but coasting to a stop. Does it suddenly stop if you press the clutch?

Wouldn't have thought the turbo would whine when you are coming to slow down, or the alternator.

Thanks for your input :)

ive had the car a year and its only just started doing it, i will have to double check when exactly it does it tomorrow, but def in gear as im driving

Good to hear you dont think its the turbo or alternator :-P

could be a boost leak.

Update ... lol
Just been out in the car, the whining is very loud now seems to be not as loud when booting it but when the revs come down the whining is there, seems to not be as loud when you press the clutch

If this makes any sense :fool:

when was the last time the gearbox oil was changed ?

Scott.T 16-08-2010 09:02 PM

In all gears of just 4th/5th ?

Scooby_Em 17-08-2010 07:12 PM

The car was MOTed and Serviced just over a month ago and yes in all gears :sadnod:

As Anger said, what type of service was it? A normal service is just engine oil, dependant on millage, gear and diff oil is also done, or if you request it.

Who did the service?

scooby999 17-08-2010 08:11 PM

i have a similar noise ,mine seems to be the pump steering pump

Steve_PPP 17-08-2010 08:13 PM

the 60k service is the one where gearbox/diff oil should be changed, so it might have been missed. although i would be surprised if an oil change improved it significantly if the whining seems to have gotten worse so quickly.....

Scooby_Em 18-08-2010 10:39 AM

Hiya thanks again for your inputs :)

It was the service after the 60k as that was done early just as i bought the car last year (it was pampared! :yeah:), it was serviced at our local garage who has worked on all my cars etc, cant afford main dealer prices

Think im gonna have to send it into the garage again for them to hear the noise just to be on the safe side :(
