European Rallycross, Lydden Hill - April 24th & 25th

I don't know if interest in this will be limited as its the same weekend as the Easter Thunderball at Santa Pod, but I thought I'd stick a post up here if anyone is up for it. :)

Sunday April 24th & Bank Holiday April 25th is the first Round of the European Rallycross Championship. I'm sure most of you are au fait with rallycross, but if not it involves grids of 4 -6 cars racing round mixed surface tracks. The races are short (3 laps for heats, 4 laps for finals) so you get to see a lot of races in one day. Plus if its a boring race, its over quickly! The cars in the top (Division 1) class include a lot of ex-WRC and WRC-derived machines, all of which are running 550+BHP!

If you haven't been to Lydden before then its a great circuit to watch as you can pretty much see the whole circuit from any point on the track. Its just down the road from Dover; so to get there is only a quick blast round the M25 and down the M2 or M20 for most folk!

http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?hl=en&...d+Kingdom&z=14

Racing kicks off at around half 9 and normally ends around half 4 - 5; even if its busy, you should get out of the circuit pretty quickly, so you haven't got a long crawl home afterwards.

Just to get you in the mood, here's a video from last years Division 1 European Rallycross final, as held at Lydden:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ti0nGAp-fJs

Sunday will be the first set of heats, with the rest of the heats and the all important finals on Monday. Pricing for the weekend as follows:

Sunday £15 (adult).
Monday £20 (adult).
Weekend Ticket £30 (including Camping on Sunday).
Under 12s go free.

I'm definately going the Monday, so if anyone fancies meeting at Clacketts and convoying down to Lydden then add your name to the thread! :)

No worries mate, hopefully there will be a few Scoobs heading down there!

Apologies for the double post, but the early entry list is now up.

Over 20 cars in both the Supercar and Super 1600 classes already. It shaping up to be a cracking weekend of racing!

Justin 12-04-2011 03:47 PM

Are you allowed into the paddock to look around?

Yeah! Some of the bigger European competitors have barriers up so you can't wander into their area, but most of the teams just have awnings up, so you can have a good nose around the cars. :ok:

Justin 12-04-2011 04:16 PM

Will probably come down then with the family. I sprinted there last weekend and it was my 1st time at the circuit, the layout is indeed brilliant for spectators, paddock entry is a bonus :)

As a spectator circuit Lydden is hard to beat. You can pretty much see the whole track from any point on its perimeter: and if the weather is crap you can sit and watch from your car and still see pretty much everything!

UK rallycross events at Lydden tend to have pretty relaxed club feeling to them, so the whole paddock is normally fair game.

Because of the FiA involvement with the European Rallycross (and the fact some teams are works teams), there are some parts of the paddock that are fenced off: but its still more open then pretty much any other major circuit-based motorsport meeting I can think of - and you can still have a good look at the vast majority of cars there.

I shall be there on the Monday.

In my usual viewing spot on the bank by the turn in point at the hairpin. :ok:

Excellent! Were you at the British Rallycross last month? I didn't see any WR1's parked up?

tbtstt 19-04-2011 11:27 AM

Minor bump for this, as its this weekend! Nearly 30 cars in the Supercar class now, so its sure to be a weekend of close racing!

I'm still not sure on Sunday, but I'm definately going Monday, so if anyone fancies a drive down I'll be at Clacketts Lane Services (heading East!) at 8:15 AM, with a view to setting off by 8:30 at the latest.

Steve_PPP 20-04-2011 07:10 PM

In my original post mate!

Monday £20 (adult).

Slightly more expensive then the normal price at Lydden (thank the FiA for that!).

Not sure of plans this Monday, but this may be an option to take the boy's out for the day.

tbtstt 24-04-2011 02:35 PM

Bump for this as its tomorrow! I'll be meeting Bandit at Clacketts so there should be a couple of Scoobs to look out for.

Are you meeting at Clacketts Anger or heading straight down there? And did you get a pass for this Steve?

Anger 24-04-2011 02:49 PM

Your car would be a hell of a lot easier to use if you stopped taking it apart every 5 minutes... ;)

No worries mate, hope you get it all sorted for next weekend!

Will confirm either way later tonight. :)

I'll be coming along now :)

Meet you guys at clacketts at 8:15am. Hope the weather's like it has been for the last few days!

Skullfudge 24-04-2011 10:34 PM

Some P1 mates phoned me this evening and we are meeting at Leeds Castle at 7.00am (roads will be manic if you leave too late).
Took me over 2 hours to get in the other year diverting all traffic around the back entrance)

See you guys at the track.
