![]() Right, when I bought my wagon several weeks ago it had been stored for monthes as the guy said it has puffed a bit of blue smoke so he didnt wanna make it worse so chucked it in the garage.
Its an 18g turbo bought from the states. We got it home and stripped it and found oil in the intercooler. We won a standard turbo for £20 off ebay but after putting that on we have found the seals have gone on that too ![]() Does anyone know of anywhere that I can send the 18g off to have it repaired properly??Fairly local to Harlow Essex, dont mind traveling within reason. Just want my car sorted now ![]() |

hi, you need to know what 18g it is td05?? or whatever.. you can buy service kits for most turbos for between £20-£40 ish.
once you have found out what turbo it is, then it may make things a bit simpler. if you need advice, send Jaffa a message, he has helped me out no end in the past, he may take a while to respond, as he is a very busy guy, but his knowlege is emense. as for somewhere near you, Try TR Racing... TR RacingWorkshop: Great Dunmow, Essex Tel: 01371 878 912 they specialise in skylines, but im sure they can do turbo rebuilds, and i know they are well respected in the jap car community |

Assuming it's a cheap ebay special turbo's from the usa of china or thaiwan origin, they are just tat..cheap copies with very little quality control.
You may get kucky and get a good one but there are more bad than good. Some so called TD05-18G have the actuator mounting too far round on the compresssor housing which then requires a flexi oil feed pipe rather then the standard OE hard pipe. Not a great expense but a big inconvenience if you were hoping to fit it and drive off in a day, only to find you now need to order a flexi oil feed from elsewhere. No-one will rebuild the turbo from the USA as the quility is ****e and any reputable comapny will be able to tell that very quickly. The likes of turbo dynamics or turbo technics wouldjust advise you bin it. the cost to refurb the other turbo would also be alot of money if you use OE spec parts. The best bet is to keep a look out for a TD or VF range going cheap ona forum that you know is coming of a running car for upgrade purposes only. Ultimatley buy a new one from a good tuner, but depending on what you go for will cost £750 - £1800 plus remapping if you go bigger. Even if the car is mapped for the 18G I would seriously consider getting it remapped even if another 18G is fitted as the cheap ebay US unit is likley to flow very different to a quality one. |

If it's a genuine 18G core with a quality compressor then the rebuild kit will work. but I doubt it is. But if it's genuine then I doubt very much it failed, as the TD's are pretty bullet proof. The problem with the cheap units is quality control and tolerances. They can be so far out that they perform badly with regard to airflow and compressing the air and/or the seals wear really quickly due to poor tolerance. |

I've use just Turbo Dynamics or Turbo Developments(this company is located Brentford TW8 9NA and here is tel.number 020 8560 3927)
About the eBay turbos, its lucky draw, some make power and are reliable, some just blown after 200 miles and don't make any power.Few people brought these turbos and is good thread on Nasioc about the eBay turbos Jura |

Thanks for your replys, the guy reckoned he paid a lot for the td05 18g but nothing to back this up. He also said this was rated to 450bhp
Just want to get it running for now and once its all running ok then can start uprating things. |

Jura, the ecu has an eprom chip too which APPARENTLY is rated to 450 bhp. I would like to just get the car running now without the smoke, the original plan was to get the 18g proffesionally redone but am wondering if this will be worthwhile now if it is dodgy copy.
Mark, will call Chris in the morning and have emailed you mate |

What year are we talking here. If pre96 the standard injectors are only good for 320max. even if chipped the map sensor cannot control boost above 1.2 bar, plus a host of other restrictions. ESL live board/chip can configure a new map sensor but doubt its got that.

sounds like the ECU needs removing and seeing whats inside, we have a Polar Performance chip in our ECU, and will boost to a max of 1.1bar and give about 300hp tops, we have been told that thats as far as we should go on a 95 JDM WRX internals, and even then, we need to change the injectors to 440's, and possibly fit an FCD.... |
