Hey all
As some of you may know im on the hunt for scooby number 4 and am thinking of getting something a little newer like a blob eye as have had all classics before. With my budget i can easily get a WRX but may be able to stretch to an STI if i hunt about a bit. What do you all think ? Is it worth trying to go for the sti over the wrx or use the money i will save and mod the wrx ? Cheers Rich |

Keep an open mind. The Sti will give you alot of extras out of the box, but if a good WRX comes along that is a couple of years newer, then well worth considering. Then ask StevePPP to drive it and it will be as fast as an STi anyway

You will get in to trouble.
![]() The wrx is weak in most areas. You will end up spending more on the wrx trying to get the thing to STI spec. If you can then stretch to the STI. ![]() |

get an sti mate as it has much more potential bhp out of the box than a wrx

I would say you won't be far wrong either way.
What is it you are after? Are you trying to get loads of power when you mod it? IMHO (for what little it's worth) go for the STi, do some minor mods and a remap to try and get it to about 340bhp then spend your money on getting the suspension properly sorted. I honestly think that's where you make the real difference ![]() |

I had the same dilemma when I bought my Hawk WRX.
Go for the STi, definitely worth the little extra in the long run, especially if you end up modding the WRX by putting STi bits on it lol. |

![]() ![]() You forgot to mention that it'll be as fast as an STI up until the point where the brakes melt ![]() If you want to mod it, i'd start with an STI. Its a better package and the brakes/gearbox alone are worth the extra money. If I was buying a newage now, i'd certainly look at slightly older STIs instead of newer WRXs. |

I'd definately go STI now given the cost of getting just the box and brakes up to STi spec if you stay WRX will be around £3k.
Depends on age/cost but options are iirc: Pre 2005 UK spec = 6 speed (long ratio) 2litre Post 2005 UK = 6 speed (long ratio) 2.5 litre wide track Pre 2005 Jap = 6 speed (short ratio) 2litre Post 2005 Jap = 6 speed (short Ratio) 2litre wide track A lot depends on what you want to do with the car - the JDM cars are generally better spec'ed, the heads are often better and they make more power like for like, however the gearboxes have shorter ratios and for motorway/autobahn driving are irritating as hell (approx 4.5k rpm @ 80mph). The JDM cars did not have the 2.5 so are 'stronger' engines than the UK 2.5's however the UK cars have bags more torque so it depends on driving style - (UK 2.5's will go to 450 or so without too much trouble). I like my 2.5 with the low down pull however the JDM box I have will be swapped for a UK box with DCCD when funds allow!

Checked mine today 2001 jdm 6 speed. 4000rpm = 90mph (indicated) might it have a longer 6th gear?
