Default European Rallycross R1 2013 - Lydden Hill

Bit of a belated post, but better late than never!

There are many motorsport events I like to watch but, if I had to go to just one, this would be it. I was a bit concerned for the European Championship as there is a new company running the series this year but, despite the entry list being a little low on numbers, it was very high in quality: and the racing as brilliant as its ever been!

Anyway, that’s enough words: here are some pictures!

One of my fave pictures of the weekend…

…Alexander Hvaal seemed to be throwing his car at the corners rather than steering round them: proper driving!

Timmy Hansen (son of the famous Kenneth Hansen) was seriously fast all weekend and unlucky not to get a podium finish. Amazing considering he is only 20 and has far less Rallycross experience than many of his rivals, must be a genetic thing!

Current European Champion Timur Timerzyanov minimising the wear on his left tyres…

The driver with the most hype surrounding him, Petter Solberg in his freshly built DS3 (it was finished just a day or so before the event!)...

…he had a mixed weekend, but was seriously committed and looked like he could match the pace of the front runners, should be interesting to see how his 2013 season unfolds. (And yes, that is Bruce Lee on the side of his car!)

This picture is mainly bought to you by Monster…

Monster flange:

A spot of testing…

…and putting that power down…

…they obviously did something right, as Leppihalme ended up taking second place: brilliant result given the calibre of competition.

Guess the car!

The other Solberg brother was also in attendance…

…wasn’t that impressed to be honest; especially as Henning did an exceptionally stupid bit of parking during the second set of heats.

Petter on the attack. Not sure if the animated way in which he car was cornering was the intended setup, but his car seemed to be rolling far more than everyone elses…

(Bloody fire extinguisher getting in the way of the shot!)

Hvaal in another big slide:

Engine porn:

And finally, Foust on his way to (a very well deserved) victory. He had a slow start to the weekend, but led the final from start to finish.

Really must get my finger out and follow the series to Europe: I don't want another years to wait to see it again!

Cracking shots mate. What shutter speed are you using whilst panning? Looks spot on

Love the sixth picture down of Timmy Hansen looks like he's standing on the brakes. Great movement in the shot, and a pro-look to your camera work. Some of the best work I've seen on ses.

Cheers mate! It varied depending on where I was standing and what I was watching: I got as low as 1/100 for some of the Touring Car shots, the S1600 and Supercar photos are all 1/160 or 1/200. Anything lower was just a blurry mess!

Wow, thats pretty high praise, thanks very much!

Funnily enough I spent ages playing with that Hansen shot. I kept thinking it would look better cropped, so I kept cropping it down... then realising I preferred the original: so its the original version that I ended up posting. Glad you like it!
