Default Track insurance

I've never been on a track but would like to after Sept time. Wouldn't go loads just whenever I had the urge. My question is how would insurance work?

Are there options like just third party or fully comp? Whats the rough cost? Do you have to go through a specialist or a normal insurance company? Can anyone get it or certain ages etc?

Most companies only offer track cover to over 25 year olds, so it'll be difficult

Great. So young people get slated and bad mouthed as apparently 'all' young drivers drive fast and speed on the road but if they want to be sensible and go on a track for a bit of fast driving they cant do that either?

I personally wouldn't want to go on the track without insurance.

May take you up on that. But you do realise how frustrating that would be for me? Lol. Thanks for the offer

My mate races in a series at Lydden in a spec c. Could always ask him if he would drive you around there some time.

Just did a quote on insuremytrackday.com. Got quoted £100 for a day.

Now something I'm not really understanding is this in their FAQ:

Will you pay for any damages caused to another vehicle that I make contact with on the track?

Your track day insurance policy will only cover damage to your own vehicle. Track day participants are liable for damage to their own cars (regardless of fault) and sign disclaimers to this effect before going onto the circuit. Participants go on track at their own risk and standard motor insurance conditions do not apply.

So all track insurance you get only covers yourself? If I were to crash into a £50,000 car would I be liable for anything or is that up to the owner?

There was a thread on Scoobynet a while ago where a 22 year old guy was complaining about the cost of insurance.
He said it was unfair to tar all young drivers with the same brush, and went out of his way to tell everyone how he was a sensible driver, didn't take chances, and had never had a crash.

2-3 months later he posted some pictures of his car.......

..... After he'd rolled it down a country lane.

Track cover only covers damage to your own car, if you hit a £50,000 car and write it off its his loss. Change you take doing a track day.

That's why I always get track cover. You can be the bet driver in the world, but if the guy behind you can't drive or is pushing his luck you have a lot to loose.

I'm not complaining about the cost of my insurance. I'm paying almost £3000 a year and I am not moaning, I understand that I (like all young drivers) are inexperienced and will have to spend this amount on insurance on the car I want. All I was saying is surely it's better for a young driver to drive hard on a track and if not many companies will track insure under 25s its hard for us to 'practice' our driving.

I am not saying I'm a good driver and not saying I'm the most sensible.

But I have only just realised what track insurance covers so really all this is wasted as though I would be liable if I hit someones car.

It's like walking down the street and a couple cross the road just because I'm young so they assume that.... im carrying a knife?

As Moley said, you pay your insurance to cover your car. So if you hit something else, thats his/her bad luck if they are not insured. If you insure yours and someone else hits it, you are covered.

It's definitely worth it IMO, cover yourself against someone else's mistake rather than your own.

Its up to you at the end of the day. I've done trackdays both with and without insurance. It doesn't change the way I drive, but then i do my best to stay clear of people that look like they might get into trouble.

Could also be something completely innocent - guy in front's engine lets go and he dumps his oil on a corner for you. You end up in the barrier but neither person did anything wrong in terms of their driving ability.
