Default suspension

I was looking for some lowered springs for my wrx wagon and ihave a couple of questions,
speaking to a old skool mechanic he said he used to cut the standard springs down, can this still be done on more modern cars?

Also is the sti/ra suspension lower than mine and would it fit?

Thanks Jason
