Looked at getting a while back, things that put me off were that brakes aren't cheap, the in-car tv option isn't worth having if the car is older than 2004, where the rear sub frame is bolted to the body there's a chance that cracks will start appearing, BMW did a recall on this but only for cars up to 10 years old, so if it has these cracks and was never sorted it's at least a £1000 job (think its redhill motorsport or something along those lines that do the repair).
OEM rear springs have a chance of snapping, Eibach rear springs are meant to solve this problem.
Looked at several examples and to be honest none of them were as described, think a lot of sellers think their car is best out there, there's a lot of repaired M3's out there, many of them badly repaired.
All of the above made me decide to stick with Subaru's, please don't let me put you off if you really want one mate, just wanna pass on what I came across when looking at them, you'll need to have patience to find the right one, hope this helps.

Don't they have trouble with Vanos or what ever its called too?

I love them though, very close between an E46 M3 and my scoob when I bought it. Only the price of tuning and the fact I really wanted a turbo'd car stopped me. Don't regret it though

Yep!! rattly vanos units common expensive jobs along with common wishbones and brakes as adam says as are the over tank rear brake lines rot along with the warping subframes! another if a manual is the bushes in the gearbox wear so when engine is cool gear stick sits in 5th position and gear change can be a nightmare! smg boxes are a nightmare too! Bmw are nightmare motors if not looked after most 3 series are rot round the arches but are good motors when there good! tbh i wouldnt own another bmw unless i had enough money to not worrie if problems occour another one to keep in mind the natually drink oil!! All cars have there u and downs but not us much as ive experienced with my bmws!! what about an audi rs4???

Jeez! Never knew they were (potentially) that bad!

Anger, is your E36 an M3? Widely regarded as the best one made.
