Yeah the measurements didn't match up - so new turbo being dispatched today to me... geo is all done, and yes it will be good to get it out on the road! And Lydden!

I am having trouble sourcing a quieter back box on a 3" though. I don't want to replace centre section and back box, as it would only be swapped out on track days.

Closest I can get is a Hayward and Scott back box that reduces dB by around 4dB.. which isn't enough...

needs to be below 100dB for Lydden static (no drive by at lydden).

But Brands and the respectable tracks () are 92dB drive by I think (sure someone can correct me - so I need a 10dB reduction, which most back boxes alone aren't going to give me.

I've spoke with cobra (as I have a cobra system) and they won't sell just the 3" back box, only the centre and backbox as a combo...

Mine is 89db at 2/3 throttle on static at Bedford which is a pain of a place for noise

Unless of course to have put the time, money and resources in to getting a better result then that.

I'm sure everything will turn out fine, the bigger fuel pump and injectors is a wise move.

Indeed it does make a quick car - but as rob says - if I wanted 360bhp I would have bought an SC36 and wouldn't have bought supporting mods for more

Just want the bang for my buck (pun intended)

Well after a long long long day the car is ready for some action...

Mr Rob was a good sport and let me stay over his last night and then was a real sport and came with me to Plymouth, leaving at 3am this morning!!! Thanks mate - especially for sharing the driving on the way back and the pizza last night!

(Nobody needs to know how we got my car out from ur flat though!) ha ha ha

New RCM 850cc injectors fitted, and new 340ltr fuel pump also installed.

Remapped and dyno'd and the car is running ok, although still under power for the supposed turbo I have, but will do for now...

Injectors running 60% duty and fuel pump 75% so both very comfortable.

Once again - can't thank my man Rob enough for his help and support today - keeps me sane that lad

Roll on Lydden 16th sept

Good to hear , why so far ?
Looks from the graph that there is more in it.

I hoped there was more in it to Chris but not to be - it hovered around 358-362 for 5 pulls - and squeezed that 369bhp out at the second to last run - 13 runs in total.

I didn't understand most of what Martyn was explaining (nothing new there with me and cars! ) but he was saying the uprated MAP sensor I had fitted wasn't needed as the ECU won't go much past 1.55 anyway (I'm lost now as I type so apologies if I make no sense!) and that the turbo didn't have anymore to give.

I must say I was disappointed - I had hoped the mods I had done would have supported more, but I guess a car is only as good as its weakest bit...

It's running well, and holding nice boost very smoothly and idles lovely so shouldn't complain - just thought I'd have squeezed nearer to the 380 mark...

Next year I will make the decision whether to go full hog and do the engine and another turbo etc but for now - she is running well and I should enjoy her

To be honest the difference between 369 & 380 you probably wouldn't feel anyway, what matters is how it drives as peak power is only a figure, if it drives well and feels quick then i wouldn't worry about it

I run 1.75 on the standard ecu....just need to re-scale the map sensor accordingly..(and remove the safety cut)

Through the fueling and boost charts up if you have them Ryan, mid range might be able to pick some up with a little bit of extra timing around 4.5/5k but (might cause det too!)

369/350 for that turbo isn't bad considering top mount and not running lots of boost.

Considering swapping my bugeye STi scoop for a blobeye STi scoop... anyone done it? Is it just scoop and scoop undertray needed? Just think my bug needs so height at the front...

You'd have to get an non-genuine STI "style" scoop as the blob ones don't fit on a bug, the footprint is different.

Personally think the genuine bugeye STI scoop is the best looking on the bugs, they're all rounded at the front (bumper, headlamps etc) and the blob style is too angular.

Well car passed it's MOT today - few minor advisories but nothing that won't be sorted very shortly - also got down to Zero Exhausts in ashford.

Met Kevin who is a cracking guy, a specialist in fabricating customs exhausts. (He was currently making a Ferrari track system and American hotrod)

Agreed for him to make a custom track day back box for me at a very very reasonable price

Well back from Kevin at Zero Exhausts... brilliant guy who knows his stuff!
The car now has a modest 3” tailpipe, and 385mm long 250mm wide baffle in the back section. Still with 3” fitment for easy swapping out on track days.

Gotta say on the drive home, It’s was positively silent!!! At start up there is a little burble, but as soon as you put revs through it, nothing! I would even go as far as to say it’s a nice quiet ride now. Well beside the huge induction and turbo noise I can now hear as I am not be droned out by the exhaust

Quality of the welding and workmanship looks spot on!

Nice, need to have a listen!

I reckon that's got to sort you for those 95db trackdays!

Hahaha, performance improving parts are more fun but the functional bits are just as important. Looking forward to replacing my exhaust at some point but that’s only because I can’t stand the noise!

Well minor update - as not tracking for a few months I decided to put the old noise maker back on this morning

Got bored of sounding quiet!

No wonder the custom rear section is so much quieter than the cobra... also gave me a chance to properly look over the work done by Kevin at Zero Exhausts. Truely is some top work and amazingly neat welds...

If you want a real good read, look up Dave's project thread (ginola).

rob and Steve also have good write ups (NL03Scooby + Steve_PPP).

Now I like a loud exhaust cannot see the point of a nice quiet one lol.

Before I put the nur spec on mine I had all the boxes removed from my old exhaust> not even a back box and that sounded insane

Well car is off to "Super Jules" on the 24th. Just to have all the coilovers checked over, and lateral arms looked at to make sure all is still good after installation late last year.

Poss going to have oil cooler fitted depending if he can solve our current conundrum of the Power Steering cooler being in the exact same place as the proposed Oil cooler installation gap.

Putting the other side doesn't work due to the horns, and bumper profile (not enough space) so maybe he will move the PS cooler?? Although it has fixed lines so interested to see if he has the solution...

Either way - car will be good to go, and maybe even sporting some new shiny bits.

Watch this space.

Ryan

I get a few metal supplies from zero when i get in a jam and my orders from other places take longer than expected, always seem helpful....

Any plans after the oil cooler and suspension is checked? As my grandad always used to say " Cars are like model railways.... They are never finished "

Car is pretty much where I want it - I’m just never satisfied if there is something no matter how small not quite how I want it... so ur grandad was quite correct..

Ok so morning with Jules...

- coilovers tightened up
- diff oil changed
- gearbox oil changed

Also had a look at fitting oil cooler but I need a longer pipe..

Nice bit of routine maintenance done before tracking in April, June, July and August..

Default The Bug...

Another small update.

Car went down to “super Jules” once more to have the oil cooler saga sorted out.

I say saga because originally it was to have the mishimoto kit fitted. However as seen with Rob’s project thread - it’s really not meant for a U.K. Impreza.

So that went back and along came the HEL kit. Only problem was - it was too big!!

We could have made it fit but 50% of the cooler would have been below the bumper and effectively not used.

So that went back and along come the spec C size oil cooler.

Fits like a dream and all of the cooler is in airflow meaning it’s being used efficiently.

Couple of hours and Jules had it fitted and nipped up neatly.

So usual oil temp is 85-95 depending on speed and roads.

On way home the thermostatic plate kicks in at 80 and kept the oil at 80-85 all the way.

Really worked well including when I stopped for fuel - left garage at 95-100 and within a few miles was back down to 80-85...

Also gave the car another oil and filter change - even though it’s only been 180 miles and 6 months since the last one! Motul 300v chrono as usual...

Was bored today and weather wasn’t bad so decided to smarten up my flaky blue air divert panel...

Nothing major but now a tidy matt Black.

Default The Bug...

Another tiny upgrade - noticed my exhaust hangers were a little spongy when I swapped the track back box over last time - these should help...

Also have the car booked in with RM Performance Banbury on 7th July to have the gearbox overhauled and upgraded.

Ever since I bought the car 3rd gear crunches badly and will not engage above 4000rpm.

Over time the rest of the gears have become slightly notchy to engage and so besides giving the gearbox oil a refresh every 12 months I thought it best to have the box removed, stripped, and rebuilt.

Going to have the Baulk Rings for 4th, 5th, 6th upgraded to Carbon Baulk rings as Subaru did with later models, and obviously any bearings, gears or other components replaced along with a Motul 300 gear oil change.

Hopefully it’s another step to making sure the fundamentals of the car are solid and secure

I fitted the same bushes to mine mate, the holes in the original rubber hangers were stretched to about twice the size of the new ones

Default The Bug...

Just a little update... the car is now with Tom & Rob at RM Performance Banbury for approx 3-4 weeks for its gearbox rebuild / upgrade...

Will update parts list in a week when I have it confirmed but few of the bits include carbon Baulk rings for 4th, 5th, 6th and a stage 3 Competition Clutch and lightened flywheel ready for next years plans.

Lastly - but most importantly - a massive, massive, massive thanks to my main man Mr Rob. Once again being a real gent and leaving his before 5am to get to mine and follow me up to Banbury in the Q5 so I had a means to get home... cannot thank you enough my man and owe you as always!

I’ll update with more info in a week or two..

Ryan

Default The Bug...

Ok an update from RM Performance.

Parts required are as follows:
3rd gear
3rd gear synchro
3rd gear hub
3rd gear sleeve
3rd gear selector fork
4th, 5th, 6th Baulk Carbon Baulk Rings
Competition Clutch Stage 3 clutch kit
Competition Clutch lightened flywheel
.....................
.....................
Now the unexpected parts:
4th gear
4th gear gear synchro
4th gear hub
4th gear sleeve
4th gear selector fork
Crankshaft rear oil seal minor leak

So although not knacked like 3rd gear was, 4th was showing heavy wear and so it makes sense to replace while in bits...

Plus side is my pink box clutch and lightened flywheel look in very good condition (only done around 4000 miles) so they will be sold on when I get them back.

Should collect in around 3-4wks as RM have a 2 week shut from Monday.

Ryan

Will be built proof after,
One of my bugs used to catch going 3rd into 4th at high rpm.
I think the bug early 6speeds had synchro issues and was revised on later year cars.

I would any other time........but no!

I’m using a mobile guy from Rochester who does work for Inchcape Audi...

Only charging £45 per rim. And I’ve given him the paint code I got from speedline so he can create a paint match..

Mine wheels are only kerb rash around the rim not chunks out - otherwise I’d go to lepsons.

Will let you know how I get on..

Hopefully he can match the speedline colour in with the code you have him.... they will look as good as new once they are done. It makes such a big difference to the over all appearance when wheels are clean and unchipped.... look forward to some pics

Default The Bug...

Well the car is back from RM Performance

Firstly a huge shout to my main man Mr Rob and his good lady Cassie for getting up at stupid o’clock and driving to mine for 6am so Rob could come up to collect the car and drive the Q5 back. Really appreciate it you guys

Ok as you know the list for the gearbox refurbishment was quite extensive with all of 3rd and 4th gear needing replacing along with hubs, selector forks, and everything that comes with. I also had the Subaru upgraded 3x carbon Baulk rings fitted.

A few pics of the gearbox in bits etc below:

Whilst this was being done, the guys at RM Performance noticed the rear crankshaft oil seal was leaking so I had that replaced and also had an RCM Billet oil separator plate installed ready for future plans

Then came the Competition Clutch Stage 3 kit and lightened flywheel

This completed the gearbox work.

Whilst chatting with Tom at RM (who is an amazing chap and so knowledgable) we discussed my future plans and we decided that a catch can would be beneficial.

One day later I was the proud owner of an RCM Track Track Catch Can Kit with return to my RCM baffled sump and had Tom, Mick, and Rob install it before I collected the car today.

I can not recommend these chaps at RM Performance enough. They are very very knowledgable, experts in transmission overhauls, upgrades, and also anything to do with general modification and servicing. Located 10mins from Prodrive

They also specialise in engine rebuilds and upgrades and lets just say we have had many a long email over the last week or two (sorry and thanks Tom! Ha ha) and I feel these guys will be seeing my car and another Scoob quite a lot towards the end of this year and most of next

Be sure to check them out if anyone needs gearbox, diff, engine work or general Modifying and servicing
