Looks like quite a beast you're building there. How did the wheel refurb go?

Wheel refurb is Tuesday

Thanks mate - just trying to cover all bases so the basics and fundamentals are right... anyone can slap a big turbo on but a car is only as good as its weakest point - and I’m hoping to make my weakest point me and not something mechanical

Glad to have her back indeed mate - although have to use her as the daily for just over a week to bed the clutch and break the gearbox in - done 200miles of a recommended 500miles so far...

Poor girl isn’t going to know what’s happened to her being left outside to the elements

Scoob looking great Ryan, will be interested in your opinion with current and past 'specialist's you have used if and when we meet up. I'm always interested in people's experience's when tried and tested.

Hi Mate,

Wheel refurb didn't go ahead in the end. The chap arrived, and then said he had to shoot due to a family emergency - no problem.

Then later that day said he couldn't re-arrange until mid sept so I said not to worry for now.

Funds have gone on more practical shiny parts at the moment anyway

Well some goodies arrived from Alyn this morning - super speedy delivery and great price as always - thanks Alyn

RCM Performance Fuel Regulator Kit + Billet Fuel Rails and gauge.

Then I have a set of Phenolic gaskets on the car already but as the inlet manifold will come off I decided to have a new set fitted..

There was another bit ordered but is on back order from RCM so should be here in 3-4wks

And just like that - another parcel arrives...

Simtek Pro ECU...

Could have gone Syvecs or Alkatec but for my needs, and price - Simtek was more than ample...

Going to town indeed

U prob know next mod - makes sense IMO.

Next years big project will require all the above so makes sense to do these now and make use of them...

Cars booked into bodyshop end November to have new sills, new rear arches, respray and full waxoil under treatment as well...

Here to stay for a few years yet I hope...

Will be Steve yeah... although it’s only a temp booking as drew really isn’t well and they wanna see the car but cannot give me an appoint to drop it down yet - and there is another bodyshop doing some work for a mate soon who may well be just as good and cheaper... but provisional booking is with D&A

Have a few on the table at the moment... but it depends on budgets and future mods next year so could easily change...

Default The Bug...

Next little addition...

I have an uprated 2.5-Bar MAP sensor on at present - but seeing as the car is going to be mapped again for the Simtek etc I thought I would future proof that bit too....

Perrin 4-Bar MAP sensor should allow much greater control in the future

Well this has all stalled really - through no fault of my own.

Process West FMIC was ordered via RCM back in late August - originally on a 2-3 week lead time. So car was booked in with RM Performance for early October to have everything fitted and Dyno day at Thwaites Development to have the Simtek installed and the new parts remapped in.

2-3wks came and went and the message from RCM was that it had been delayed and would be another 2-3 weeks max.

These came and went as well and so I had to cancel my RM Performance slot and also the booking with Thwaites.

Then the update coming from RCM was it would be here end Oct (so another 2wks) so giving an extra week to be sure - I rebooked RM Performance and Thwaites Dyno time for 3rd November.

You probably know where this is going...................the two weeks and then extra third week are upon us and RCM now state it won’t be with me until MID-DECEMBER!!!!!!!

Now this is not anyone’s fault - the supplier I purchased from has always kept me updated when I have asked, and RCM by all accounts have had a delay due to Process West having manufacturing issues and delays etc and then the goods being put on sea container rather than air freight and then replacement items not be available to re-ship via air freight blaaa blaaaa blaaaa...

However - this is actually the second time I personally have had issues with RCM supplying parts in a row... the first being 4 months ago when some parts I ordered for a colleague took 1.5 months to arrive when they were originally quoted as being in stock! And these weren’t coming from abroad (Process West are in Aus). Apparently it took 1.5 months to powder coat an induction trumpet!!

Anyway - like I said - this is an update on my project (albeit a frustrating one) and doesn’t intend to foul mouth RCM or any suppliers........ it’s just me having a rant

So hopefully after Christmas the car will be booked in and have all the parts fitted and mapped in...

Ryan

Must be very frustrating Ryan, I always hated waiting for new BITS even if it was only a day or two. On the good side, my car continues to amaze. Cracking job you did.

Yes there is HDI GT2 which you can get direct from the manufacture or I'm sure TDR is the only supplier in the UK

Yep brake ducting going to be going on after Xmas

Taken me a while to find replica fog covers for the prodrive bumper - genuine ones are rare as rocking horse sh*t...

Managed to pick these up online from Trumpland at less than £100 including shipping. Very thick material, so should be good to go with a little bit of fettling.

Got myself some fibreglass kits, and going to try and adapt these covers to take the inlet ducts flush (hard on a curved fog cover) and then will get them sprayed up.

Then for track days I can just swap the fog covers over, attach the hose to the back of the fog cover inlet duct, and away we go. When track over, remove hose, and refit original fog covers...

simples......."squeak"

Is that the angled one with the slant mount radiator - if so I always liked the look of those!

It should do - I have all the parts when it arrives - just need the funds as what I did have set aside got spent on Xmas and wedding items!

My biggest decision is whether to leave the car as it is for Germany and the track days this year and then add the bits for next year - or whether to get all the bits fitted etc but face the prospect of not being able to afford Germany or as many track days...

This build keeps getting better Ryan! Honest question, does a FMIC make a big difference over a TMIC?

I've always loved the front mounted look.

That’s something I would like to know is it worth it on a standard turbo ? I keep thinking about fitting one before I get my map check

I’m lead to believe it doesn’t unless your running high power.......................or planning too going forward

standard STi top mounts do a decent job into late 300’s early 400’s so I’m told...

I’m running 375 on standard STi top mount with no issues currently..

Sure someone can clarify...

To be honest, no-ones going to notice the FMIC when you're smashing them with 375! Will look a lot meaner though, can't wait to see the result!

375bhp isn’t big power for scoobs and I definitely won’t be smashing anyone on the track

All of the guys that know the ring well (Ginola, Big E, Steve_PPP and others!) have a wide range of power between them and abilities and are very very quick!

People like Rob (NL03Scooby) is very quick at Lydden and Brands and has around 320bhp - power doesn’t necessarily make you a better driver

What’s important is you learn YOUR car, learn what it can and can’t do, and more importantly - how far your willing to clench your a** cheeks to get to the limit of your ability and car.

Thankfully - my ability is low, and I’m aware it’s low, so I go quick enough to enjoy it

Doesn’t mean I don’t always want more power, more ability, and more experience though

I see your point, I'm still pushing the limits with the Wagon to see what it/me can handle!

375 not big power...? Jesus. I'm scared of my 262 sometimes haha

Ginola is well into the mid 450’s (I think!), and I know CJ was running something in the 600’s (a few year ago!).

Lots of people on here run in the 400’s...

Classics with 400+ are quick as they are lighter than newages...

My mechanic has a 500+ classic and that runs very nicely at lydden - combined with his knowledge of the track...

As I say - it’s about you having fun with what you have and finding your ability limit safely

I know! Once that's done I'll get myself a new set of wheels. Can't wait for the first meet this year tbh...

Good luck with the front mount install, can't wait to see the results.

The important thing to remember with a front mount is not the power benefits but the reliability benefits, especially where Imprezas are involved. Bare in mind that although a top mount intercooler works and fits the flat 4 engine nicely, getting air in that scoop and cooling the intake air has always been something Subaru has continually tried to develop and with good reason.

I think I was once told that at over 70/80 mph the scoops on the classics up to the hawk eye's are struggling to funnel a good feed of air through the intercooler (have you noticed how big and re-designed the scoobs turned out on the hatch's and newer...!). A few big pulls on the autobahn at high speed in higher gears and Scotty can tell you the rest...

Theres also stationary heat soak issue that a fmic over comes too.
the rings the worst for that, sitting in the Que waiting ready to go out then straight to full beans . i kept mine at low revs for the 1st bit to help towards this, Fmic will help instantly.

That's an interesting looking box mate.

When are we going to see the shiny stuff inside it?

I find it much worse when coming off the Ring, everything is at a million degrees and then you have to queue to get off the circuit and through the car park!

Scotty's trouble was mostly a leaking coolant system.

What sums it up generally in my opinion is :
More power = more trouble.

Steve PPP's is virtually standard WRX with 90K plus on the clock and my WR1 is also virtually standard neither have had any issues.

After having now done 10 trips to the Ring as far as I know the only scoobs that haven't made it back are ones that have been modified running bigger turbos and then been remapped.

With bigger power yes its nice to have, but, everything else has to be uprated to suit.

A cost effective mod that people tend to not bother with is to get a baffled sump.

Totally agree with the sump and making sure your base is solid and reliable and that supporting mods aren’t skimped on

Steve I forgot about leaving too, I also slowed it down off the second karrsell then straight off the track and run down the road to reduce temps slowly.

It's fitting the right bits and matching components is key which this build has all over it.
Full of gems on it.

Yeah my type r shat itself doing 144mph on the Autobhan

The Fibreglass is to re-enforce the brake ducts before spraying.. they aren’t very thick so I want to build up the joints etc

Some nice shiney bits there Ryan. Hopefully see you over here late spring so you can give it a run out on our very quiet, well maintained roads. Also good advice there from Big E.

Regarding the comments on power I totally agree with Ryan's comments "it’s about you having fun with what you have and finding your ability limit safely "
I have been very fortunate to have been a passenger with Steve PPP (Brands Hatch), E , Ginola and Scoobyslayer (Evo)'Neil' at the ring and Charlie and Neil again at Bruntingthorpe.
Each car running different power levels from just under 300 to over 450 bhp and for me it's not about the amount of power it's who's behind the wheel that has made each drive such an awesome experience whatever the bhp.
Power doesn't = talent and you need talent, experience and confidence to drive really fast

That's why I drive like Miss Daisy

Just catching up on posts, can't wait to see how the front mount changes power, not just the bhp but the torque.

Be interesting to see - although I doubt the bhp will increase as I am limited by the turbo........................for now
