hi peeps! im upgrading my turbo in a couple of weeks on my wrx to a vf34 and hoping to get around 330 bhp with my supporting mods and was wondering if it would be a good idea to get a 3 port boost solenoid or is it not so important at least bhp
thanks sam |

Probably worth getting to improve boost control - the 2 port might be fine, mine wasn't as it couldn't control the boost so I had to upgrade be a pain to get it mapped but not reach the full potential for the sake of a relatively cheap part.

a 2port will easily support 350+ BUT they need to have the correctly sized "pill" to enable the range to work......

totally agree. all that technology and those bloody brass pills can make a world of difference. sometimes its old school tinkering that's required

Guess I was conned by PowerStation then! Although I guess a 2 port would be struggling now!

not sure what you were told so "conned" is maybe a strong word........it can take a bit of messing to find the correct size for the restrictor to enable the control to work in the correct range so often people cant be bothered..........
we have a 2.5 running a 20g with all supporting mods that still runs a 2port and boost comes in very early and holds all the way through the range.......think from memory it took about 2-3hrs to find the correct restrictor (was built 10yrs ago) and at the time 3ports weren't as easily/cheaply available

Fair point the prodrive was only £60 quid and fitted in 5 mins so cheaper than the faffing about!

Without it the bug's struggle to hit much above 1bar regardless of what you tell the ECU to do, hence why I used to have a tray of the smaller restrictors. |

Poking my nose in my jdm bug recorded a 1.4bar boost think that is on the standard 2 port?

It would need a smaller restrictor pill or a very tight actuator on the standard TD04 to achieve that. A different/larger turbo would be different though. The pill size primarily effect the spool and spike, but can effect the held boost on a breathless turbo.
